What is a domain really worth?

I was having a conversation today with a client of mine that is a art dealer and i was asking him 'How do you decide how much a painting is worth?'. his response was 'However much the person infront of you is willing to pay for it!

It made me think that exactly the same applies to domain names..... how much are they worth?

again the same as 'One mans junk is another mans gold'

So back to the art......... people pay millions for total crap because it was painted by...........

So maybe i should get a name for myself by registering crap domain names and sell them for a fortune because there were registered by me! or maybe i will get Lee Hurst to register a few domains for me and sell them for millions??

They're a bit different. "Junk" domains being sold at a high price is rather rare. On the other hand, you know for a fact that something like Diamond.com is worth a lot of money.

Yeah, because sarcasm is sooo easy to detect on the internet. <- that's how you do that. :p

Anyway, I thought about it for a second, but seeing that you are a newbie, I thought it wasn't.

Your friends answer was the correct answer, and was the same exact answer i had in mind to give once i read the title of the thread.

How ever, a domain value (for those that are in the industry) depends on some factors, such as (but not limited to) brandable or non, premium or non, age of the domain, clear word of the name (no hyphens) and some other factors (keep in mind, even tho you see high sales on .TV domains maybe, the .com always beats them all).

    Just my two worth cents.

I have a different opinion. Even if you have a very odd named domain but you have created a very good brand value for this domain then you can sell it for a higher price. Say for example thr is a company here in India called BPL but when they went to register a domain called BPL.com it was already taken by some one else. No body will say that BPL.com is a very good domain name but the owner made a fortune by selling thos domain name to the company.

Apart from top dictionary and type in words, some keyword domains and few more things, the domain is worth as much as the site on it - content is what matters today and if you match it with a good name - Jackpot!

You should check out the top sedo sales information on DNJournal. You be amazed at what some domains go for. I absolutely agree with the point that a domain is worth as much as what ever someone else is willing to pay for it.
