I think it's a necessary evil in the world we live in now. do I like the idea of BB watching, well no but in regards to protection I'm all for it...does not mean we should turn a blind eye to them just b/c we think they have our best interests in mind.

    how's that for wishy-washy :p

I feel it is an illegal step in the wrong direction. We need less government - not more. Both these parties in the country want bigger government when all that means is higher taxes, higher bills, and less freedom. The internet will soon be split and you will see the free commerce online of individuals like us collapse. What happens when your ISP can legally change where you go when you enter a domain name - and you have to pay all the ISPs if you want your domain name seen by everyone? What happens when the 13 root servers are no longer responsible for the entire internet's domain systems? What happens when there are two separated networks and you have to purchase the right to see competition ISP sites? What happens when the internet is no longer free? Chaos. Chaos, and absolute loss of income for anyone here who makes money online. The only people who will still make profits are those who can create content and sell it - and even then the demand will be low.

You're looking down the barrel of a gun, and the government is poised to pull the trigger on the internet. By the way, since most of the traffic in the world passes through the U.S. because most of the 13 root servers that run the domain system of the entire internet - and to add that all the DNR's get their info from these 13 - everyone worldwide will be affected. That means India, England, France, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, and EVERYONE ELSE will be SCREWED.

Oh, by the way - did I say most? I meant ALL 13 root servers.

This is exactly the reason that I am voting for Ron Paul in the 2008 elections.

He is the only Republican candidate who voted against the iraq war and he wants to put a gold standard back into play, so the USD stops losing value!

He also thinks the government has no right to look into people's private life and what they do online. :)

    Ron Paul 2008!

Check out some of his videos on Youtube. :)

The ignorance in this thread makes me wonder if it is really worth it to bring another child into the world.

The government is NOT looking for a way to look into people's private lives. It's not like us as ISP's are constantly looking at every customer, what they do, where they go; then sending this information back to the FBI.

The purpose is to have a method in place by which you can gather information about a person or persons only when specifically requested by subpoena. This is nothing new. The FBI, and more recently, the Dept of Homeland Security has routinely requested information from our company.

This information is requested by way of a court ordered subpoena only. The information requested has been VERY, VERY specific. Generally things like, last known address, telephone number, aliases, email addresses, etc.. Times on line. I have never been specifically directed to give the government information about where someone has gone, or what they have downloaded.

99.9% of the cases I have dealt with over the years have been for child porn cases. In every case, there was legitimate cause to pursue these people, and I was only glad to help. I have never and will never volunteer any more information than was required by subpoena.

Other issues I have dealt with are of a copyright nature. No one's private details are revealed, no one is losing rights, and no, the government is NOT spying on internet users.

This entire thread is hogwash. Stop being so damned paranoid. I really wonder out of all the people posting in this thread, how many are ISP's?

It's amazing how paranoia and conspiracy theories are born. Actually it is quite scary.

Actually, it looks like you did not. And it is quite obvious many here did not even read through the entire original post. I subscribed to this thread 2 minutes after the first post, and have followed it since.

Like I said, a lot of ignorant people here.... I'm sure more will continue to post their big brother concerns and anti-Bush sentiments as a result of the continued pursuit of ignorance.

No one is spying on internet users in the US, PERIOD!

FYI, I saw your post about the "court order", however, while you might get it, the majority here do not.. That is why I said what I said about this thread. So 99.9% of the people responding are ignorant.. ;)

you had how many wiretap scandals just the last couple of years in the us? just off hand I can remember the mass wiretaps the bushies ran without a warrant and the ones ran on key journalists, sure they don't admit they'll try to spy on everybody but you can sure bet they'll try everytime someone isn't looking (btw hows that domestic nsa wiretap thing going? any trials yet? )

you bet ignorance is bliss for some people..
