host is hostgator - need to buy new domain

I just got hostgator for my hosting and registered a new domain when i signed up- I now want to purchase another domain for another project but hostgator seems expensive when buying domains. How else can i do this? I mean if i register a new domain somewhere else do i have to transfer it to hostgator? Or do i just start ftp-ing my files to the new domain name?

A webhost is different from a registrar. You may register a domain anywhere you like and set the name servers according to your web hosts settings. I recommend GoDaddy, you can register a .com for around $7 or a .info for about 1.21

No, you can register a domain anywhere you like and you dont have to transfer it to hostgator.
What you have to do is to go to your registrar and change the two name servers of you new domain to use hostgators two webserver. Name servers look like for example:
    99.hostgator.com

    Dude
Just register domains from www.domainsite.com or www.namecheap.com or www.godaddy.com and host it on Hostgator
    How ?
    After you buy the domain...
Go to your Cpanel.... Click on Addon Domain... Add the new domain name.... then login to your Registrar (from where u purchased domain) and Change the NameServers ...

Just read FAQs how to do it.. you'll find it :D

What is your plan name at hostgator?
If you have Hatchling you are in trouble because you can only have one domain on that plan.
If you buy another domain and use it on the same account you have its not called sub domain, its called addon domain.

You should just have to set the nameservers to hostgator.
I've got a bunch of domains I bought at godaddy that I host at hostgator. its very easy.

No, you go to addon domains and there you just make an addon domain.
Parked domains are domains that are not in use.

    WTF???

addon domains says this in cpanel
    "Addon Domain Maintenance

Addon Domains are domain names that point to subdirectories within your account."

it wouldnt be a subdirectory ???

but under cpanel for parked domains it says this....

    " Parked Domain Maintenance

Domain pointers allow you to "point" or "park" additional domain names to your existing hosting account. This will allow users to also reach your website when entering the "parked" or "pointed" domain into their browsers."

    that makes more sense....
i did already add my 2 name servers when i bought the domain
    but i dont know......help

I know, this is not easy to understand if you know nothing about it.
You are going to use addon domains, forget parked domains.
Just make your addon domain in the addon domain section.
You will now find the addon domain as a folder under your main domain. But don`t mind about that, it have to stay some where, right?

The domain can use 48 hours to propagate, but its very seldom that it take so long time, usually it takes just a few hours, sometimes minutes.
