Will non-recip backlinks from slightly different keywords hurt me?

I am targeting a specific key phrase with one proxy server I have - Unblock Myspace. If I can get a back link that is non reciprocal on a page where the content is keyword - Unblock school, which is also in reference to a proxy server, will that hurt me? The page is new, but the page rank for the domain is 7+. It would not quite be considered an article, but it would be in the middle on content about exactly what my page is about, but I am striving for SEO on the "unblock Myspace" and the page is keyed on "unblock school". I presume that this would still benefit me, and it almost seems stupid to ask.

However I am new to this and I am not targeting the unblock school, but I want to rank for unblock Myspace. Also if it will hinder me from ranking for that term even if it helps me for "unblock school" then I would rather not have the link.

Am I being paranoid? lol :) I just got some good advice when I started, and that was "do it right" so I just want to go out of my way to do it right. So what’s your experience and opinion?

IMO, ONE link cannot hurt. However, if you have lots of incoming links using the wrong anchor texts, your site might not end up showing high in SERPs for your targetted keywords.

ok, what if they have no anchor text. Like the link would just be http://www.xxxx.com ? For that matter what about back links in general that are posted that way?

Any backlinks is good (Or the worst is NEUTRAL)... you cant control whats beyond your site.

If any kind of backlinks to affect a site, then alot of competitors will be using this technique to get rid of their compeitions already. Imagine the Mayhem ....

I happen to agree with login. It's good to not make all your anchor text exactly the same. Using similar phrases is a good idea and mixing up the keyword phrases best if you have 50+ links. I like to use the gkw tool to get some ideas on high traffic phrases for anchor text. Not the really really big ones, but ones usually under 20,000 searches per month. Once you get the lower traffic phrases ranking well, than you can move up to the higher traffic ones.:)
