I dont think it's worth it, myself. I thought about trying it with a P4 just to say I've done it, but the gains from it don't justify the risks taken imo

i still remember my friends P2 which i have successfully overclocked, it was working well untill it burned! but then i did that when my friend insisted so he had nothing to say!
anyways, i have done it on quite a few processors, p2-p3 and it usually works fine!:)

You should write an article on underclocking too. Some people ('silent' PC nuts) underclock their cpus so they can run way less cooling. I like the idea, but my PC is silent at standard clock speed so I've never bothered.

Too much effort for too little reward in my opinion - particularly for a technophobe like me!

    Disagree with the above poster.

I've overclocked a 1.1ghz to 2.0 ghz with no heating issues. It's like getting almost double the CPU power for the same price !

I've also over clocked my GPU (graphics card CPU) and graphics card memory a decent amount.

Got better in game performance with minimal heating issues - I didnt have to buy any fans and my temps never got too high.

And before anyone tells me I`ll break my PC I did this for over 1 yr no problems the PC is 5 yrs old and still works (AMD Athalon w/ Asus Motherboard)

BUT - some CPUs dont over clock well

ASK GOOGLE before you over clock. Other people out there have already over clocked the same type of CPU/GPU as you so find out how far they were able to push it.

ps. You can also UNDERclock to slow down your PC so it generates less heat and uses less electricity. Many people do this. It can also extend the life of your CPU, etc.

In basic terms, Overclocking is pushing the CPU to a faster speed than what it was designed to operate as by changing the clock multiplier settings on the motherboard. For example, if you have a 2.4ghz CPU and by changing the speed to say a 3.0ghz. It is pushing your CPU beyond 100% of its rated performance.

If done correctly, you get a better performance then what you paid for. However, overclocking the CPU may mean that the CPU would heat up faster and you will need a good fan to bring down the CPU to an acceptable temperature.

Overclocking is now a hobby with some and some vendors sells overclocking peripherials such as using liquid nitrogen or customed built airconditioners to cool down the CPU and thus being able to push their CPU to a higher speed level.

    Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overclocking

Generally speaking, the AMD CPU are preferred for overclocking purposes.

I have overclocked an AMD before, i had no problems, however if you are going to, do it in very small stages, and not too much, for example I did it around 10 times to go up half a Ghz.

I sincerly think it's not worth becouse you lose warenty and you force the components for a very low performance

It's better to underclock your CPU or GPU to give it longevity. Overclocking cause it to over heat internally and in the end will ruin it.

Nowadays I just let them run at set speeds. It's the best option unless you have money to burn.

    Col :)

I did overclock once years ago accidentally by setting the clock multiplier wrongly and some of the CPU pins melted into the motherboard. :)

Well, in the end, do it at your own risk. I think most people overclock just as a hobby because getting faster CPU would inevitably be cheaper and better than trying to overclock and buying hundreds or thousands of dollars of overclocking equipments.

I agree with an above poster - AMD does seem to be much better to over clock but some Intel chips do well also.

Most importantly - READ what other people with your chip have done, see if they had any success.
