Tourism is the second largest private sector employer in Alaska.

The wolves compete for food with:
    • Native hunters
    • Tourist hunters
Every animal that the wolves kill is another animal that the Alaskans don't get to eat and/or that the Alaskans don't get to use to attract tourist dollars.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll hunt down a presentation that a buddy of mine created about some work he is doing with native villages up there. Those people are poor.

He recently talked me into volunteering up there, so I may be going to see for myself soon.

OK, but tourism is maybe only 1% of Alaska's income. And if the government hunts down wolves and shoots them down or if they don't, it is not going to have this huge effect on tourism anyway.

So are you saying that no predatory wildlife deserves to exist anywhere on the planet because only predatory human beings should be allowed to eat?
I think it would be a sad world if we eliminated all of our wildlife.

So wikipedia is wrong? Everybody is poor in Alaska?

Your funny Will, I think you just like the art of debate right or wrong:)

You really need to learn to read for comprehension.

Go back and review the first set of bullet points.

The locals disagree with you, as represented by the state government.

Why would you believe that you are more of an expert on Alaska than the people who live there?

    Here are some stats:

    Contribution to Alaska’s economy:
    • Tourism’s total economic contribution to Alaska’s economy exceeds $1.6 billion
    • Tourism’s induced (multiplier or income) effect in the economy is over $2 billion

    Contribution to Jobs in Alaska:
    • Tourism’s core industry topped 26,000 full-time equivalent jobs (9.1% of
Alaska’s total employment) to become Alaska’s third largest private sector
employer with over $579 million in salaries and benefits.
    • Tourism’s total economic contribution to Alaska’s job picture is over 39,000
jobs and $1.15 billion in salaries and benefits
    • Tourism’s induced (multiplier or income) effect is almost 47,000 jobs and
$1.36 billion in salaries and benefits

Contribution to State and Local Government:
    • In 2002 Alaska’s Travel & Tourism sector generated $152.4 million in state and
    local tax revenue
    - The State’s share was over $94 million - over $20 million of which is direct
taxes and licence fees, the balance of almost $74.5 million includes airport
landing fees much of which are generated by the travel industry
    - Local governments received about $58 million
    • In addition, the Statewide Passenger Car Rental Tax generates $7-8 million
per year for the State treasury

No, I am arguing for wildlife management. It's you who are arguing for absolutes.

The Alaskans aren't trying to kill all of the wolves, they are just trying to keep their population in check.

I am fine with that, but that also means that you have the responsibility to pay for what you like. Right now, you are foisting that cost off on the people of Alaska. Why should they pay for what you want?

"Everybody" can never be poor, because of the way poverty is defined.

But send me your e-mail address and you'll see that we have more to worry about than wolves.

Although, I just called my friend Bob and he told me that our project in Alaska is on hold indefinitely.

    Nah, I'm always right. :D

But yes, political debate is my guilty pleasure.

    "Nah, I'm always right.
But yes, political debate is my guilty pleasure."

    I thought so:)

What I wish is they would have some large designated lands that wolves would be protected in. If they go out of that they can be captured and re-released or possibly killed depending on situation and if immediate danger present. I don't want to see the goverment up in aircraft shooting down wolves, ever. The wolves have a right to be here just like we do.

If you really feel that way, buy some land, fence it off, put some wolves on it, and don't let anyone hunt on it.

That's what money is for -- to buy what we want. :)

I ain't gonna have no wolves on my land there freaking dangerous!
    HaHa Just kidding.
I would like to do that but I don't have much money. I was thinking maybe I could raise some like a charity, but on the other hand I have other priorities as well. I help domestic dogs and cats. The stray dog I had recently had his nails growing in his pads and he was starving. So I paid to take him to vet and get him fixed up. Plus I feed all the stray cats in our area, I have already had 3 neighbors just show up and donate cat food. But hopefully my website will take off some day and I will be able to help more.

They were going to bring wolves back to NY but people cried about it

They need them to thin the deer, coyotes kill some deer believe it or not. Smaller sick deer. A couple years ago a wolf was caught in NY, by a coyote hunter, so they may come back on their own

This reminds me of the annual seal hunts that occur in canada...control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered or shot by a helicopter.

Well said, Will. I am a former 15-year Alaska resident (30 years for my wife), returning next month to settle there for a while in retirement. You have stated the issue clearly and correctly. It's amazing how people quote "public opinion" selectively. Lots of those polls are taken among the Lower 48 populace. Let Alaskans manage their wildlife. They can do it better than some activist group from, say, California or New York, most of whom have never set foot in that greatest of the 50 states.

nothing is quite as thrilling as exterminating those ravenous beasts - baby seals.

    You mean like this?
    Or what about this?
    or this?
Must make them feel like real men to do this.
It's as easy as clubbing one of these - considering they are just as defenseless.

Let's start skinning people. Especially the defenseless. That'll be fun, won't it? I mean, baby seals aren't the only defenseless ones among us - why not infants and the retarded? Lampshades are always in demand. While we're at it lets skin some horses and some puppies too. Or do this to them.

That is more horrible than the worst nightmare I have ever had. I honestly hate those men. I don't care if they sell the fur to buy food for there family or any other reason. They belong in hell.

If I held power I would bring punishments that go beyond what is allowed today - and swift retribution will let the rest of the Apes know what will happen if they exhibit these undesirable traits.
