What is Google's relationship with Answers.com?

I did a search for "new york city" in G and off to the right of the "Results 1 - 10 of about 370,000,000 for new york city", there's a [definition] link that directly links to the definition of new york city at answers.com.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=new+york+city

If I search for "mobile phone", the term is split into two links; one for mobile, one for phone. Both link to the definition at answers.com.

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mobile+phone

So my question is, why doesn't G capture that traffic for itself? Just link back to more search results for the linked words. Why link to answers.com?

Answers.com buys placement in Google just like Yahoo and other search engines do, however they negotiated placement for "definitions" instead.

Your question: Why don't they capture it themselves?
Answers.com is a good informational site and until, and if Google develops their own system, using a third-party provider makes sense.

Well I didn't know that they were actually paying for the placement there. Are you sure they're paying? I haven't read that anywhere on the web so far.

Look at the top right, it's right next to the number of results.

My apology for conveying a direct paid relationship. By 'paying' I simply meant a relationship was facilitated that benefits both parties. Google is not doing this out of the kindness of their heart, it does affect their bottom line in a positive manner or, they would not do it.

According to blogger Michael Nugyen on: http://www.socialpatterns.com/2005/05/page/2/

John Battelle says "Google and Answers.com’s relationship is very unique. Google does not pay Answers.com for their services and Answers.com does not pay any money for the placement. A winning combination for everyone - great for the users, great for Google and definitely great for Answers.com."

Thank you for clarifying that information about Answers.com. I had no idea that they had this sort of relationship with Google. Speaking about Answers.com they have acquired Lexico, the owner of Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and related sites. I wonder if their relationship with Google will now change?
