Yes you can list your site on as many directories as possible..
To get attention, get featured listings.
Buy banner ads, textlinks, forum signatures and avatars..

But you will require some budget before you get $$$ :)

For targetted traffic --rent atleast 15 signatures/avatars from members with post count of 1K+.
    Budget --$225/month

For backlinks --buy site-wide from 20 large --well indexed sites-- I prefer article directories. PR of the site does not matter --but to be sure --check it should have atleast some inner-page PRs.
    Budget --200$month.

    For PR -- buy 3 PR7 homepage, 4 PR6 homepage, 10 PR5 homepage.

    Budget --$400/month.

You have to continue this for 4 months before you can expect any return.
And don't sell any single site-wide on your site before PR updates.:D

So total budget --$825x4=$3200 --after that you will get good returns --atleast $300/month.

So it will take you 14 months to break -even if you do not get good and bulk submissions.

You know, if I have seen this a few months back I would have probably said that you were wrong. But now, when I am still down over $1,500 with my directory, I must say that your estimation is close to right.
Although, with right promotion I believe it can take less time to break even. At least, I hope so

Yes you need to promote as much as you can budget and face the fact that you probably won't show any profit for 6-9 months.

Those were my conservative estimates. But yes --with right kind of promotional techniques --and marketing you can definitely break even quicker --no doubt about that.

I have apprehensions about Google adwards. Are they worth? I guess 1 click would average 50C --and per day you might be spending a lot --will you get required submissions?
I am yet waiting for someone who tried this consistently for a particular period of time and post the ROI.

As you can see it will cost you alot with NO GUARANTEES. Personally I'd try and buy an established one for a few thousand dollars or start a niche one and build a resource that has a directory in it. You'll build your own backlinks organically and naturally which is what SE's like anyways. Also if you want your DIR to one day go over PR6-PR8 or higher I think if you buy your way up you'll be stopped at somepoint and the minute you stop paying for links suddenly you have nothing... Make a quality site for your visitors and intime you'll make good $. It's the same with anything in life. People buy VALUE if you can deliver value you; you can collect $.

If your joining this industry to make a quick buck... Much too late tooo many sites that are PR6 (Great ones), and TONES TONES TONES trying to catch up at PR5. There are new dir's made daily and others left daily.

If you really want to do a general dir anyways best of luck you'll need it :)
