    Hi All,

Do SEO's recommend web directories? If so, how do they determine which ones to recommend to their clients?

    Thanks

The value of directory links all depends on the directory. Some are excellent and help increase PR and bring direct visitors. Some are nothing but spam.

Good directories aren't a waste of time. Personally I try to stick to on topic ones, and the really big ones like www.dmoz.org and yahoo.com . Regional directories are also a good idea.

    Diretories provide two benefits.

    1. Link popularity. This can be a mixture of good and not so good directories as it is all about volume.

    2. Backlink strength: This is related to the strength and quality of directory as mentioned previously by others.

So in summary volume and quality are what you should puruse but if you had to prioritize one choose quality.

    Good luck!

Yeah, of course. But I recommend directories from the highest PR up to the lowest. There are lots of directories today, of course, you need to choose the right one. You need also to maximize your effort of submitting your sites to different directories.

As for your directory, lot of potentials for me. Good luck!

Try first to get to big directories, Paid or Free.. It can give more traffic and also backlinks to your site.. Also do submit your site that has a lower PR for they also helps you gain more backlinks...

    Regards! ;)

Check out aviva's strongest directories; it lists the strongest players inthe game. I'd look at that list and go with the ones most suitable to my niche and budget.

I always recommend the biggies, like business.com, botw.org, etc...

But there are a lot of industry specific directories. Thomasnet.com is an example of an excellent B2B manufacturing directory. There are hundreds just like it that give you a good solid link, as well as have their directory pages ranking. Just do a search for a few of your keywords and drill down at least 10 pages. Those are the ones I'm going to recommend to my clients.

Also make sure the directory doesn't use the "NO FOLLOW" trick on your links.

This will cause search engines to not count your link on their site. This is usually done by reciprocal link directories. They are then basically getting a one way backlink from your site which is stronger than a reciprocal.

Directory listing can't hurt your rankings. The most valuable ones are niche-specific directories.

They do not hurt, the should be useful.
I would prefer an article or at least sentence about the site. Having link from related site is much better.

    adiadi81, I agree.

However, if you must submit, I would certainly go for Yahoo, Aviva, and Botw. :)
