Yet Another Search Engine Optimization Thread (YASEOT!)

Discussion in 'SEO' started by Martindale, Apr 27, 2007.

Almost makes me want to start a "Yaseo" company or something.

Anyways, I'm looking for some search engine optimization reviews for a roleplaying portal, forums and chat.

Thanks in advance, rep is available for good tips.

Pretty fresh site - you got around 40 pages indexed by Google, no indexed backlinks so far...

You should know, that you have to use your keywords from the metas in your bodytext. Sometimes SE's penalty your relevance if you don't use them in your bodytext.

I don't know the reason but your website needs about 10seconds to load.

I would recommand you to add more text as your keyword density is very high.

The keyoword density in your description meta is too high.

Use: Roleplay Your Way. before Welcome to RolePlay Gateway Forums, Guest.

    hope that helped.

Also, we're 301 redirecting from http://gwing.net right now, which was our PR4 domain.

Your site takes too long to load, I was going to cancel out because it was that long of a wait. +27 seconds to load and I am sitting in a data center looking at the site.

1: analytics code is at the top of the page, move it to the bottom. This might help speed up the load time of the site.

2: Your page title is not optimised correctly. Index - RolePlay Gateway doesn't help you much.

cormac - had a very CPU intensive script as the index for some reason, it's not there anymore. What would you recommend I look at instead, for the title?

8everything, thanks - this is a long standing issue, and I'm working on it now.

Use keywords that you are targeting for that page but make sure that if someone reads it that it will make sense. Take a look at the page title of this thread, its using the title you posted which will work well in the search results.

Take a read through this to see what you should be doing with your page.

Dont forget, move the analytics code to the bottom of the page, just before the /body tag.

The site is loading faster at this end now. ;)

    Thanks for the link, cormac!

We're using a forum for the core of our site. How do we pull the most relevant information from a thread to populate the title and description of the page? Do we use say, the first 15 words in the first post for the description, and the thread title for the title? Or something like that?

That would sound about right but don't take my word for it as I don't build forums.

There is probably some type of SEO module for the forum software that could do this for you. Open a new thread asking if there is such a SEO module for your forum software, you'll get a better response than within this thread (I think).

Yeah, I agree. I'm excited that I finally got it to validate, too.

So, does anyone have any more SEO tips for me?

Optimise your page titles next. They are extremely important so you should make them a priority.

Alright, I've stripped them down to the user created title, and then the site title. Should that be enough?

Okay, now I'm going to see what I can do about the meta descriptions. Most of them are 80% identical, with the page title tossed in.

What other items can I do? What about my index?

Check to see if you can get a plugin to fix them. You might get one that can scrape the first few lines of a post or even use the thread title.

Something I just noticed looking at the page titles for each thread. If you can, remove the statement 'view topic' as this will only lengthen the page title which can result in wording being chopped off in the Search Engine results.

From the looks of it you index page title could be better optimised.

Yeah, the index page is a placeholder for a really slow script that had been there for a while. We've become so active that the index, with all of the information it displayed, took 10 or more seconds at times to generate.

I'd like to get my current index page all optimized and such. What are everyone's recommendations for the front page?
