Digg by far is one of the most powerful social networking site around.

It does drive a lot of traffic but even before you put in effort driving traffic to your site, ensure that have quality content on your site.

From my personal experience, I've noticed that most of the users who "Digg' around are quite tech savvy guys, so most likely they wouldn't click on your 'Ads'. But, if you have a really nice offer or a great value for money product or service, then you can make a bit of money.

Stumble upon, again is good for getting traffic, but not quality traffic. Now again, a lot of visitors from stumbleupon are 'stumble' frenzy ppl. So most likely the time they spend on any webpage is considerably lesser than the organic visitors, unless you have something very unusual and cool offer/content :)

To be successful on any social networking sites,
    1> never spam,
2> share content which you think is really valuable,
3> don't just promote yourself. There is a lot of other content which is worth being shared. Share 'em.
4> build your network and gain trust of 'da community members.

These are some of the ways you can possibly profit from social bookmarking sites.

    All Success,
    G

Depends what you are after and what niche your are in. Digg does nothing for me, I don't even bother about it. Reddit is not much better.

If I want some traffic I go to Stumbleupon. If I want backlinks I submit to magnolia.
I also submit other peoples sites.

    Hello,

I don't think I can use digg or reddit because I have a site with Free Software Downloads. But I used SU.
Something strange happened: I got like 120 thumbs and 21 fans and one day had 1000 visitors. Now I have 210 thumbs and 60 fans and no traffic. Can someone explain to all of us how that SU really fors to drive traffic?

Can you please tell us the url for Magnolia?

Reddit and Digg use something like thumbs/time unit to decide if you are on the front page or not. If you get lots of them in a short time, bam front page. if you get a bunch later while a lot of time has passed, well not much influence.

    Magnolia:
    ma.gnolia.com

The reason I say its good for links: Most of the stuff I bookmark there gets bookmarked by a whole bunch of their users (=backlinks)

All of these sites should not be abused. Use them to submit good content you find online (not just yours) and if you wrote something good noone will mind when you submit that too.

Yes, but it seems strange that I get no traffic from SU, even if I have many fans and thumbs...

I've tried most of the bookmarking sites and havn't had much success with them.
I think Digg would be good though if you really had something interesting that a lot of people would "Digg". Sometimes its just hard to determine what other people are going to think is interesting.
