Confused: High Cost Adwords, paying little in adsense

Can someone help me with a new site with adsense. I researched my topic fully, lots of people searching for the main keyword and many others on my list.

Googles Keyword tool shows a cost 95 cents for the 18th position for my main keyword. Looked like a winner so I built my site. Its only been up for a day, but I got some sad results.

I got 1 click that paid 7 cents. Baffled, I asked a friend to click once (a no-no, i wouldnt do it in any other circumstance). That paid 40 cents.

These clicks, going by cost of the adwords, should be paying ALOT more than 40 cents.

Anyone have any ideas why its paying so little? My other sites are paying more, with not nearly as good adword cost results.

    Thanks,
    Trisha

Don't forget about Geography. A click from Malaysia won't probably give as much as one from New York. Just look at the referrals: A firefox installation from the US is 1$ but I've had my share of 0.10$ and 0.20$ firefox referrals from other countries.

You also must accept that lowing paying ads will filter in to the page. There are a wide variety of ads on similar keywords.

Ads cost more when displayed on Google's search results and less when displayed on websites ('the content network'). Was the 95 cents for ads on search pages or on the content network?

In my games related site the clicks are between 1 and 4 cents. From time to time, I'm lucky to get clicks for 10-15 cents.

So.. I don't know, I would be pleased with 40 cents a click.

By the way, I've noticed that most if not all image ads are giving 1-2 cents/click.

you'd think they'd want you to use the image ads more but they seem a waste of time on most sites, I guess.

    Trisha,

There's a host of factors involved with how much you get paid per click. In the first instance it's likely that the ad clicked was a lower paying ad then the subsequent one was a higher paying ad. All the ads displayed DO NOT pay the same, regardless of which niche/topic/keyword you target.

I've had my share of low paying clicks, and you also mentioned you've just started, so don't be surprised if you start seeing your cpc going down. I think google usually put high paying ads in beginners pages.

don't be too sure about arbitrage. i earn good money from it for 3 months and then after that im not sure if it's temporary smart pricing or the crisis i don't earn anything from it anymore.
