How do you deal with hyperactive children?

I have a niece (3yrs old) and a nephew (1+yrs old). Both are hyperactive kids. They love to explore and won't listen to their mom. My sister always lose her patience! Her kids will listen to her only when she shouts on top of her lungs!

So, how do you handle this kind of children? Any suggestions?

Children.. they seem to never get tired!!!!!

Ah, what you need is some conditioning for the kids (have you learnt intro to psychology before? :p)..

Maybe read them a story? They should calm down while listening (temporary though!)

I guess I'd try to set some boundries. If the kids misbehaved I'd take away their privileges, and when they behaved I'd reward them. Isn't that the basic idea?

Exercise - lots of fresh air and exercise. Early morning jogs are the order of the day!

Getting kids tired? I think you'd get tired first..
    from:
    1) trying to keep up with them
    2) answering their million questions about everything possible on earth.

I am betting Jim hit it on the head - SDD
But if that isn't the only problem, try taking them off all milk products for a week.
    - seriously -

I have six kids, so I do have some experience, and I think Jim had at least two that he has sent out on their own.

Thanks, debunked, for your support of the (Spanking Deficit Disorder) SDD remedy. :) And yes, we did raise four children, all grown up now, and all productive citizens with good character. SDD was not a problem in our household as they grew up. The kids had their needed "board meetings" when their conduct was unacceptable. The key, in my experience, was love-and-discipline, not just love, and not just discipline.

Hyperactive kids ? oh man , I have a cousin who is that kind. There is almost no way to control her. Keeps talking all the time and just moving here and there. Her parents have a hard time controlling her , they usually get tired and let her do what she likes too.

Yes, a reward system should work and putting them in time out spot for 1 minute per age. Also, the kids seem to be bored and sounds like they don't have a everyday structure. For instance with my dogs they know what is coming every day. I do the same thing with them daily.:)

Taking away privileges will only make them more unhappy and more disruptive.
