Actually the 640K quite has never been successfully proven to have originated from Gates and he himself has always denied it. Check wikiquotes: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Bill_Gates

There is enough stupid and evil stuff coming from MS that there is no need to falsely attribute more to them :)

Personally I've finally converted to FireFox (atleast on my laptop). Why? Because it somehow got on to the top of my start menu so when I press the Window key and then "I" to open a browser it's been doing FireFox instead of Internet Explorer.

Funny how lazy we can be :)

Microsoft can't take on google. Too late now. Microsoft had the chance in 2000 but was too busy building xboxes. Just a lot of hot air.

I think in next few years we'll see some serious fighting between Microsoft and Google. Hopefully in our benefit! :)

And the latest example is Google paying webmasters to promote Firefox.

    Let the games begin!

One of the greatest things about Google is what it does to the competition. Remember about a year ago when free mail was about 5MB?

In the past it's been Google making moves that competitors then follow, which has been good since it raises standards. But now it seems like the competition is finally realizing they have to lead in innovation to have a chance (take the new yahoo beta mail as an example--imo this is quite an impressive step by yahoo).

allot of people are down on Bill, but I respect the man. I was messing around with computers before microsoft(god i fell old) Bill was just a "HACK" that was in the right place, at the right time, with the right product. It was really IBM that GAVE Bill all the power. If IBM had any future sight at the time the DEAL OF THE CENTURY went down we would all be running IBMSoft OS's Bill and his buddy only paid $50,000 for a "HACK" of CP/M that was fitted to run on 8086 CPUs. CP/M at that time ran in ROM on allot of units, but since this hack ran on floppy disks it was called Disk Operating System DOS for short, and the rest is history.

Yeah I'm a bit sick and tired of this old story about how Bill got a HACK of CP/M, yes it's true he purchase some product called QDOS from some other company (which Microsoft eventually purchased) and like you said the rest is history. What you didn't mention was the first preferance Digital Research had when IBM visited them (after Gates had nothing to offer IBM), at the time Gary Kildall (RIP) wasn't home and his Wife rejected the offer of producing an Operating System for the IBMs, so they went back to Gates, which brought a copy of QDOS from a company which had taken a copy of CP/M v2.2 and translated it into 16bit assembly. How much of that is correct I'm unsure - there are websites out there which probably explain how the story went a little better.

As for CP/M running on ROM on some systems (for myself Amstrad CPCs) CP/M was on, though the software was 3rd Party, Digital Research designed CP/M so it would Bootup on a Floppy Disk - we get many people with an interest for CP/M asking where they can get Floppy Disks for their system - this has been happening since Don Maslin passed away, sadily Don's work of collecting System disks for many CP/M based system was vast and his service for the community was well recieved - he carried on this operation up until his sad sudden passing.

Like I said elsewhere, Digital Research -did- produce a 16bit version of CP/M (called CP/M-86) which stemed across a few 8086 based (non-IBM) computers as well as IBM PCs/XTs. In the late 90s a patch was applied to CP/M-86 which allowed it to function on 286s/386s/486s/etc, etc.

Regardless of what happened I use CP/M out of interest of translating programs from DOS to CP/M-86 because there are few programs and it's just nice to see there was another Operating System which could be capable of having stuff simular to what DOS programmers have done in the latter periods.

On my 8bit Z80 it's more about taking an Interpreted BASIC program and turing it into a BASIC like Compilable based CP/M Program. So in the truest sense I look to the hardware of a machine rather than rely on Libraries (GSX for instance) which make CP/M programs more mainstream for a number of CP/M based systems.

Google needs to be kicked in the pants...HARD! and I think Bill is just the man to do it. Google is also a hack. Do you know why the interface is "so clean and simple" because at the time of development and deployment the coders did not know much about HTML so they built the interface using the least amount of HTML possible :)

Sorry I disagree with you there, you have to give credit where credit is due, Bill was a little slow on the 8 ball, what suprises me is his Internet Explorer web browser allows people to View and Use Google! :-D

    Remember Netscape?

    Cheers,

Kkibak, you are right - Google is fantasting at obliterating their competition. I loved the infinity + 1 response to Yahoo's infinite email storage. Classic.

I think we are relay on google little bit more right now, and our expectations becoming more and more day by day from G.
75%+ people will not happy with their upcoming paid search services if they execute the paid search project most of the G fan will be diverted to Y fan or MSN friend.

Yes well it's true that relying on one search engine can be a bad thing. In this case Google will simply pluck out the sites which pay (or whatever) to have their site as the number one search.

I can definitely say that having a Geocities website, for Google to pick it up it has to be some silly wording in the title. In Yahoo though I use words which could relate to someone looking for some Images of certain Environmental Bushland Reserves. Not surprisingly, Geocities -is- affiliated with Yahoo, if it were a Google Based website, it would accumulate more hits!

Actually he is taking on Yahoo for $50bn! Microsoft could build a portal as Yahoo for less than one billion.

His Internet Explorer was stolen from Netscape.
As for Netscape well it's become the new Firefox.

Well ain't that sweet that History can repeat on itself. I dare say bits and pieces of Linux can be found in his latest Vista OS! ;-)
