Why on a Pit Bull?

I really understand why people own a dog. I had one as a child and might have one now if not for allergies in the house.

I see stories about Pit Bulls and unless you raise them for fighting or are expecting rival gang members to roll up in your crib, why would you have this breed when there are so many other breeds like Boxers, Bulldogs, St. Bernards, and others that tend not to make headlines?

I've read the arguements in favor of them, it's not nature it's nurture, and don't throw them out with the bad examples. But still I ask why not get a less controversial breed?

Pit Bulls are banned in Australia now. I'm sure other countries will follow suit.

I speak from first-hand experience when I say that this is exactly the reason why they (the people alluded to in the article) have these types of dogs.

I think it's a matter of personal preference. Why get a poodle when you can get a retriever?

Poodles and retrievers don't quite make the mauling headlines like Pit Bulls. Not a good arguement.

The point is that some prefer a pit bull over other breeds just as some prefer a retriever over a poodle.

yeah and I prefer a Siberian Tiger to a 'Tomcat' but...

The problem with animals, any animal is that they can be sometimes unpredictable. It's beyond me why people are willing to take such a risk with a Pit Bull....a certified killing machine.

Why not just leave loaded guns around the house near the toddlers like 'Tank' Johnson of the Bears

That's a reduction to the absurd...
He asked, "why would you have this breed when there are so many other breeds...?"
The answer is: because they prefer pit bulls over other breeds the same way some prefer retrievers over poodles.
I'm not answering the quiestion, "isn't it dangerous to own pit bulls?"

Hold on there Mr. Heston of the NRA. I was not debating whether or not people should be allowed to own them, all I'm saying is that maybe if the owners aren't responsible enough, they should stick with a pet rock instead.

Let me guess, this was also absurd? Tough beans mister...just my 2.0¢

Pit Bulls are what people make them, i've seen Pit Bulls that are scared of people do to abuse they have suffered. Why didn't the Pit Bull rip the abuses face off? why doesn't the Pit Bull attack people now in self defence because it's scared of people? because it wasn't brought up that way.

I know for a fact i could make a Shitzhu more aggressive than a Pit Bull if i had both from pups & could even make the Shitzhu attack people, but the media wouldn't pick up a Shitzhu attack as a major story because violent Shitzhu's don't cause major damage or make great stories whilst Pit Bull attacks do.

If you were just listening to the media then you would probably believe that only Rots/Bulls attack people.

I bet there's more attacks carried out by other breeds than Pit Bulls.

When you say Shitzhu attack I picture one flying off my foot as I kick soccer style 30 yards in the air.

I personally like Pit Bulls. No, I don't live in a ghetto. I just think that a dog is a dog, and the only fault is that of the owner who did a terrible job bringing the dog up. On a larger scale, this goes into the South-American/Mexican population statistics. Sure, steretypically, they kill, rape and steal, but the individuals that fall into those stereotypes were brought up in that manner, through no fault of their own.

You're the one who quoted me first.

As far as owning pit bulls, I am in agreement with you.

but you quoted me back, so you know, it's on :p

I think (possibly) a small % of PB owners buy them for the wrong reasons and that is why ultimately they get a bad wrap but still...they should exercise some caution and take responsibility for such actions...of course we're talking about people who buy dogs to train them to fight and be vicious so...

loose/loose if you ask me. Buy a poodle, save a child ;)

    ****Y!! :D

actually the hero dog in the story, Jack Russel, those can be quite feisty so I am not surprised it mixed it up.

My best friend growing up had one...it escaped one day and for some odd reason a neighbor had a goat...the JR went medieval on the goat

I've said this many times but I'll say it again...

There is NO such thing as a bad dog or bad breed - there are only BAD trainers and BAD owners!!!

Edit: Any dog or person will attack if you give them a good enough reason.
