Well rate is stable at 40 rs around at the moments.

    XE shows 40.8320 INR
While PayPal shows: 39.9555 Indian Rupees

So PayPal rate is now more closed the 40 Rs.:)

If you need the money then just take the check, otherwise you can put it on hold and hope for the best. It can go up or down so if you willing to take the chance, it is up to you.

INR has increased a lot in last few weeks...however USD jumped a bit today.

Long term USD will surely weaken more against the INR.

The newspaper rates are usually inter-bank rates and they do not normally apply to mere mortals like us unless you are moving hundreds of millions of dollars at a go.

Current Interbank rates are 40.950 40.960 http://www.smithbarney.com/news/news6.html . They are typically higher than retail exchange rates.

http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic is an interesting site which could track back historical (interbank) exchange rates.

    2007 1 US Dollar = 41.16000 Indian Rupee
    2006 1 US Dollar = 44.93496 Indian Rupee
    2005 1 US Dollar = 43.58500 Indian Rupee
    2004 1 US Dollar = 44.45000 Indian Rupee
    2003 1 US Dollar = 47.43000 Indian Rupee
    2002 1 US Dollar = 49.08300 Indian Rupee
    2001 1 US Dollar = 46.87000 Indian Rupee
    2000 1 US Dollar = 43.68000 Indian Rupee
    1999 1 US Dollar = 42.78000 Indian Rupee
    1998 1 US Dollar = 39.74000 Indian Rupee
    1997 1 US Dollar = 35.78000 Indian Rupee
    1996 1 US Dollar = 34.63000 Indian Rupee
    1995 1 US Dollar = 31.42700 Indian Rupee
    1994 1 US Dollar = 31.37250 Indian Rupee

(Rates based on May 3rd of the years)

Interesting to see how the exchange rates changed so much over the years.
