For example: A camera store with the key words digital camera in it.

You want your keywords in domain name for 2 reasons. Serps and for people to be able to tell what site is about just by looking at the domain name.

It's definitely important - do it if you can, but don't assume you won't get rankings without it. It seems content is king these days...

What's the relevancy of '9' or 'jeoff' with digital cameras? If the answer is none then why have either in the domain name? It doesn't make sense.
DigitalCameraGuru or Expert is a lot more logical.

I have heard both that keywords do help with SERPs and then I've heard that they don't matter. Does anyone have a study handy which demonstrates that they do indeed help a SERP? I'd think this would be hard to demonstrate.

Of course I do recognize that keyword laced domain names will help make them memorable so that make them worthwhile in and of itself.

Absolutely, the keyword in the domain will give you a boost when relevant. Even subdomains with relevant keywords help your rankings.

planetocean.com has alot of info on this though you may need to register.

When you search in google or any other search engine you see words in domain and url are highlighted. And I'm sure they do add some value to ranking. So choosing domain name right is very important for initial phase of your rank development. Numbers in domain probably won't make much difference unless people specifically search for them. But even then they can be trimmed from search query.

From my experience having my keywords only (no filler) helped me achieve top rank for my keyword quickly (note that it had low competition...). I find that having your keyword in your HTML page names (keyword.html) helps a lot as well.
