A client of mine want to protect their trademark and redister the .ca version of their domain. Unfortunatly they are in California and from what I'm reading .ca domains can be registered by Canadians only. Anyone face this problem before and what did you do about it?
Yes, that is true. The only person who can register a .CA domain name and not be in Canada is the Queen of England. What they can do is set up a dummy company in Canada to register for the .CA version of their domain name as you need a local presence. Alternative, the rule allows you to set up a .ca domain name if you have a Canadian Trademark. Check the Requirements at http://www.cira.ca/en/documents/q3/...entsForRegistrants-EffectiveDateJune52003.pdf That is why I never bothered about the .ca domain name. However, a check on Google shows that there are some registrar who may let you do so by using their canadian address instead. http://www.web-solutions.dk/domain_registration_america.htm
A US trademark is only good in the US. Is the Canadian trademark available or is it taken? Registering a Cdn trademark can take years, $$$ and I believe you still need a Canadian presence. It is possible to cheat and register a ca domain without meeting the requirements but you risk losing the domain.
I am not even from the UK or even in EU and yet I can register a .co.uk domain name. I believe there are restrictions for the other .uk domain names but the .co.uk is free of restrictions for all.
Further to what Eddy said, here's what I managed to collect regarding limitations for UK related domain name regs: ================================================================== .org.uk There are no restrictions for the registration of a domain name with this extension. ================================================================== .me.uk There are no restrictions for the registration of a domain name with this extension. ================================================================== Registration is restricted to Limited Companies registered at Companies House in the UK. The main stipulation is that the domain name must match the company name exactly. Abbreviations are not permitted. We will require your registered Company Number to complete the registration. To obtain your company number you may look up your company name at Companies House (http://www.companieshouse.org.uk). ================================================================== .plc.uk Registration is restricted to Limited Companies registered at Companies House in the UK. The main stipulation is that the domain name must match the company name exactly. Abbreviations are not permitted. We will require your registered Company Number to complete the registration. To obtain your company number you may look up your company name at Companies House (http://www.companieshouse.org.uk). ================================================================== .uk.com There are no restrictions for the registration of a domain name with this extension. ================================================================== .uk.net There are no restrictions for the registration of a domain name with this extension. ================================================================== .gb.com There are no restrictions for the registration of a domain name with this extension. ================================================================== .gb.net There are no restrictions for the registration of a domain name with this extension.
There is also the .ltd.uk which has the same restriction as the .plc.uk . I believe the '.uk.com' , '.uk.net', '.gb.com' and '.gb.net' are not TLD in the first place but just some entreprising company who wants to pocket from that opportunities.
Yeah, I missed ltd.uk which is right next to plc.uk. As for the uk.com and the like, see I called them all "extensions" to not lead people into thinking they are TLD's, yet you can register a .uk.com name which can be appropriate for a uk related business.
Haa haa.. no worries. I was just looking around and found the ltd.uk , otherwise I would not know about it. I did not even know there is the .me.uk domains.
Well, I obviously knew about the ltd.uk since I were to register one for my company, however because they only allowed full company name as the domain name which did not suit my preferences (a bit too long of a name), I gave up on the ltd.uk and picked up a shorter .com name. On a side note, I don't like the .me.uk names at all, eh.
Yep, sort of selling subdomains off .uk.com name. Only the owner is an established registry, CentralNic and I take it uk.com isn't much different from .co.uk to me.
