Yet ANOTHER way Google is screwing us

I'm getting really sick and tired of some of the things Google is doing these days. I just got overtaken in the SERPs for one of my more important keywords. What page overtook it?

How do I compete with Google? They are now ranking themselves in the SERPs for product result pages where they get money if the item is purchased (Google Checkout) or if the Adsense ads on the right are clicked. Of course they're going to ensure they rank themselves high when it's such a win-win situation for them!

Google is no longer a search engine company. They are now a huge competitor to webmasters.

Looking at the results they are ranked 10th. I could understand your complaint if they were ranking #1. Even Yahoo is ranked higher than Google. That makes it look like they are playing fair to me. Just keep working at achieving a higher ranking.

I guess the term isn't that competitive or your seo wasn't all that good for you to get taken over by a search page........sad indeed......stop complaining and do more seo.....

They're ranked 3rd for the keyword. It's not "men's cargo pants"
    There's about 1 million results.

Do more SEO? Sounds good, I'll buy more text links.

    Oh. Wait.

1 million results isn't a lot to be honest...

The numbers work a bit differently purely commercial search terms.

That's not the point. Who cares if it's 1 million or 100 million results. The issues:

    1. Google checkout product search results are now being indexed and ranked reasonably well in the Google search index. As just about anything can be sold and searched for on Google Checkout, more and more pages are going to be indexed. These compete with you and me.

    2. Google places Adsense ads on all these content pages. There is only so much advertising dollars to go around. Each page Google creates like this leads to revenue dilution which means less money for you and me. Let me explain:

Let's say I have a site that sells pants. 1 million dollars are spent by advertisers using adwords per month who want to market pants. The more sites that deal with pants, the more that 1 million dollars is diluted out. This is why PPC for Adsense has steadily been going down over the years. It's also why Yahoo has much higher payouts; there isn't that dilution yet.

Competing with other webmasters is fine. But now we have to compete with Google for content page results?

    What will happen?

More and more people selling items are going to get outranked by Google Checkout search results. Therefore, they'll:

    1. Buy more text links to get ranked higher (or not...)
    2. Put THEIR items up on Google Checkout so they get direct sales.

This is a monopolistic practice by Google and webmasters and companies like Paypal should take notice. Because before long, if you want to sell a tangible item, the best way will be via Google Checkout due to the unethical way Google is abusing their monopoly on search.
