I would highly suggest bid directory owners to innovate or try to get away from default template of displaying of prices on their homepage.

I'm wondering if the paid links issue and the blantant showing of prices paid, is why DollarLinking.com got axed.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I agree with all your comments as they are 100% accurate. He whom has the deepest pockets does have the largest advertising budget.

But the question is ~ Is this the way you really want things? Paying for SERPs? We already have adwords that is PPC.

The television industry spent billions setting up the infrastructure necessary to display their ads and billions more on TV shows. There should not be a cheap form of television commercials.

Web sites (directories, search engines, word clouds, etc) spent $8 on a domain and $20/month on a host. Should they really get $600 for a front page ad? Sure if they can get it, they deserve it.

But caveat emptor, just because you paid $60,000 for your car does not mean that it was worth it or that it will get you better gas mileage or will never break down. For that reason, I'm happy to drive my early 80's Benz. :D

Perhaps a bad analogy but I would strongly suggest that everyone thinks carefully before they just throw money at advertising, there are many worthwhile investments to be found in directories. There are also many pot holes along the way.

The concept of bid for position is still good. Originally they WERE designed to increase exposure for advertising purposes ... PR was really a secondary consideration.

I hated having a link 20 clicks off the home page because of poor placement methods like PR, link age, or alpha sorts. Even worse I hated paying the same amount as the guy on page one who who was lucky enough to get there last year. Paying the same for less exposure is regressive and unfair.

People SHOULD pay based on where the link is located ... an idea used in all other forms of advertising. Do you pay the same for a newspaper ad above the headline, as you would for a classified ad in the last section? How about prime time ads, and super bowl commercials?

Sure the big boys will dominate the first pages ... but they are also the ones who buy advertising on high traffic sites anyway. Which in effect drives up the ad prices on those sites as well.

ROI should determine what a link is worth, and visibility is an important factor in this calculation. Why should it go to the least popular site simply because it starts with the letter 'A'?

Just because it has been twisted by some people anxious to take part in a growing trend does not mean they are ALL bad. There are a few categorized bid directories that will outlive the fad ...

    http://www.mrktcity.com
    http://the100lists.com/
    http://www.ventedoy.com
    http://yeah.st/

There are also some well supported alpha directories that will provide good service as this category coninues to evolve.

Lets face it we are talking about an idea that only started a few months ago. :)

You still pissed with me an0n? Did I not agree with you or something? :D

MrktCity will be around for a long time ... it already offers more features than most directories. ;)

phplb will release a new version soon (supposedly). So I think all of those bid directories will be able to solve the problem ;)

All right guys we got a bit off topic for a moment but I'll get us back where we belong.

I think somewhere along the thread you got the impression that I just hate the concept. Not true, I just feel they are poorly designed and planned at this point. The same goes for word cloud sites (remember I listed one that I liked in my 1st post). This is from a SEO / SEM perspective. You don't like links listed in A-Z order, I don't like them listed in A-Z categories. I really think we are saying the same exact thing.

I did say that I have a script in production right now and am looking for beta testers (thanks for the PMs, got 10 total spots available) so I can't think too terribly of them, can I?

I was actually thinking of starting a directory specific bid directory off my webmaster directory. Although i've only recently begun looking at bid directories (having just bought one on mrktcity) i personally don't think they are best suited to general submissions (unless a proper category structure is in place) and they definately won't outlast directories... however as niche turnkey sites... well i'll see how i get on with mine.

The script has to evolve before it becomes a force. hopefully one of these innovative guys on the forums (/me looks around) can put some effort into it.

High value links can easily go for $30-40 per month ... so actually that is not a bad price.

Invest two years worth of budget or $1000 ... it will be a little less "semi-permanent". :p
