If you are the owner, will you remove the story? Since they used vote to promote a story, and they have a system to buried a story, any remove story is disrespect to the member. As we can see, many digger are questioning Digg action http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Was_It_Worth_It_Digg http://www.digg.com/tech_news/HD_DVD_key_fiasco_is_an_example_of_21st_century_digital_revolt So, will you risk of being sue (using a TOS that you wrote as shield) or stand and fight the power with your user (which is one of the site's purpose, to find interesting story and show it to other member)
They were wrong for removing it. You can't copyright hex code, and anyone who says you can needs to put their helmet back on. Kevin bent over and took it in @ss for his sponsors. Total sell out.
I did'nt know the number was copyrighted. ) If someone uses the info to commit a copyright infringment go after them. Thats JMO and not the courts of course.
Lets keep the business discussion here and the chat/gossip can go here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=317289 Personally I don't think letting posts disappear is a disrespect, that's how the site works and you know that when you sign up. As for removing the content, one of the issues of intellectual property is not whether it's protected, it's whether you can afford to enforce the protection. If Digg feel that all those other cracks and warez aren't an issue and let them ride then so be it, let the community mark them as lame and self police. When Digg choose to actively police then let them. I would! They'll know if they did the right thing later on, after all the fuss has died down. I reckon there'll be no real impact.
They: Censored things critical to HDDVD Censored things critical to the decision to censor Deleted users that posted anything critical of the censorship Banned domains of anyone posting anything critical of the censorship.
IANAL, but please check what this wikipedia article has to say. I also saw the post by the digg owners. I felt that he was doing a good job, but a better way would have been to post it in digg requesting users not to post the HD-DVD story, which would result in getting digg in trouble. Or else relocate the digg servers to sweden
I'm sick of this digg HD DVD story, in just one day it already overflooded my nerve system, don't want to hear about it anymore...
I think Digg handled it alright They tried censoring it, which was in the best interest of their business even though it may have hurt their community... Then the community spoke up, overwhelmed the admins....and besides banning every digg user they conformed They really had no choice, but I think they handled it okay
Sometimes you have to fight for freedom the braveheart way. and I have no idea what the relevance of the above statement is.
Are you sure? WordPress Theme Distribution Sites have knowledge of lots of copyright-infringing activity too, are you telling me people don't know what they have on their sites? While they monetize on traffic from user contribution, they could use a little money to hire a moderator, what do you think?
Digg doesnt have much to fear bcuz HD DVD wont go after them in court, due to fact if they did, they would lose like a majority of their demographic. Business vs business, in the end it would be highly unwise for HD dvd to prosecute the major marketing tool for their product.
