The user will browse and see websites just like he/she does normally. If the user is browsing your site, and he finds it interesting, he can use the toolbar to bookmark it. Your site wont be displayed anywhere. Its just a toolbar to help you bookmark sites or pages you like, not an advertiser for your site.

They could have seen your website in your SIG and then visited your site. Also, if your website is coming in rankings on Google/Yahoo/MSN, the visitors could have landed on your site directly from the search engines.

No! The way it sounds is as if you have got mixed up with stumbleupon and traffic exchanges. If you click on "I like it!" with someones site and then they use the stumbleupon, it does mean that your site will be seen. This is how it works. If people stumble and your site appears and they then click "I like it!" it will have a little more importance. The more people that click on "I like it!" for your site the more chance of it appearing more when people stumble. Stumble shows sites by popularity only. The more popular your site becomes in stumble the more traffic you are likely to get. That is why viral and sticky sites normally get shown more and do better as they are more likely to get the thumbs up from stumble users.

Yes stumble upon puts your site in a rotation and also people can send your site to friends from their list. Everytime someone hits the stumble button, they have a chance to see your site if it fits their interest. You can also put in a search term and hit stumble and any site matching that term might come up.
