Of course, everyone is now playing the wordgame as it suits him best, but the thing is that it´s up to the submitter what criteria he uses for whether he wants to pay for a directory lising or not. A lot of directory owner don´t just sit there waiting for site owners to pay for submissions. They add sites on their own which they consider useful in order to to help people find something useful. Believe it or not, some of the directories out there do get visitors other than webmasters and search engine spiders.

    Let me say this....

    First...

His call is for Paid links.... Now exactly what purpose does it have or would it have to start snitchin on web directories that are in fact useful to them?
I would have to say absolutly NONE... I myself see him just throwing a fishing line out and seeing what kind of fishes he can catch...
I really think that hes more concerned with those whom PAY TOP $$ to be on PR7-8-9-10 sites as thats what influences the algo in the first place.

So say i just opened up a site... and went straight to buy say a few PR7s and a few PR8s and nothing more... then buy nothing else...
google would have to first see whos linked to the site then based of the PR formula make an educated decision on what they will be making that given sites PR come the update.
    So what would happen?
Well because the site is linked to only a few high ranking PR sites it would be natural to give that site
a higher PR then a site that would normally have been a lower denomination if it had only been linked with PR3s and 4s.
Its my belief that that is what they are trying to stop.... its the most logical thing i can think off anyway...

    thx

What Matt wants is to try to tune google algo to auto detected paid links.
They want to find some kind of profile that the paid links fit.

One typical example, totally unrelated links on the same page, a page about “C++ coding“ and you have a gambling and Viagra links (just screams link selling) very easy for the algo to spot and devaluate.

That's crap though dude. How the hell are we supposed to get ranked then?

Write good content and never get linked because you can't buy links for people to find it?

    P.S. does this = bye bye co-op?

I don´t know, I have a lot of webmaster friends who have sites about mortgages, celebrities and what have you, and I add their sites to some of my pages without even telling them. Unrelated does not always mean link selling.

Doesn't matter though now does it. If a new algo thinks you're link selling and tips off a reviewer to review your site and they see those unrelated links....

So what does this mean for the DP co-op?

So, if you get PHPLD and give them a back link.
-- They are getting paid with back link.

-- It is free versions you get if free for giving a back link.

    Is that bad?

The same way, Free Templates that give you free as they get the sponsor to pay for the template.

So, you can't get any free software and any free template.

What about the 3 big Adsense Boxes, that sits on each page of every web site in the world.

Is that legal (oh - It is their own box so, it is legal.

That is the cost of Monopali.. Just the mob mentality

If the link buyer pay for AdWords and Link Seller use AdSense it makes sense.

My Big Brother gets two thirds of the Pie so, it is OK for my Big G.

You rats fight for the remaining 1/3 of the pie.

Mob Boss just telling the rules.

It is the cost of Monopoly...

Matt seems to avoid a lot of direct questions relating to exact details. What I get from his post and his answers to many of the comments was that Google are looking to crack down on paid links of any sort that are bought for SEO purpose only. I do not see where a review fee would not fall into that. What I do understand is that it is ok to pay to advertise if it seems to be to build traffic.

For example, I have a frugal living website, if I buy a link for advertising on another frugal living website or a frugal living directory, that would most likely be ok with Google. However, if I buy a link on a site about building planes that has a PR7, then they will look at that as just trying for to build PR or SEO.

In a real world example, you would not advertise for woman's hygene products in Men's Health Magazine or men's products in Women's Health Magazine.

Google is looking to see if you are advertising to build your site and traffic not just build SEO or PR.

This is just my opinion but that is what I understand by everything I read.

Google's ads are javascript based so they are actually practicing what they preach.

BTW: Google bought doubleclick a week or so for 3+ billion, they are the king of selling links but not for SEO purposes. They are JS also, but these guys are the reason the internet is slowing down ... big time evil. My opinion on this is that G is starting to play around with some Black Hat stuff.

Suppose they switched the double click network over to Googles servers. Nobody in their right mind will block google's servers in their browser so we will get spammed by their mouseover no matter what.

Not sure if this is any more legitimate but what about converting over to a 2 tiered donation system. First, a small donation for review, upon review you either send the donor a link to a larger donation page or not. The larger donation page is for your annual donations subscription.

I doubt if people will get mad if you take $5 for a "review donation". If they do, it will be less mad than you taking $50 from them.

I think it screams irrelevancy, not link selling. All links on that page should be devalued because there is no theme to the page.

hmm... after all this talk, i wonder if simply changing the words from 'paid link' to 'pay for review' is going to make a difference. As someone said earlier, its just a word game.

however, being in G, he must surely need to be careful abt what he says in the blog, i'm unsure....

I think the snitch program was designed to quiet down a lot of angry webmasters that have worked years for their high page rank, and then they see newcomers jump on the scene with a few thousand dollars and build a page rank equal to or higher in a matter of months.

Also G needs to find a way to filter the search results so that it is not just the websites with the biggest budgets the place well in their results but it is the most relevant and trusted sites.

If new sites want prime real-estate in the search results they will have to use adwords (which of course benifits G), remember G is in this to make money, pure and simple. If you can manipulate their results by purchasing links then they will try and find a way to stop it because it is in the interest of their bottom line to do so.

interesting deductions...... must say that u have reasonable suspicions there. Have u read of reports concerning these angry webmasters? Wld like to read some for reference.

Abt the theory of promoting adwords, think its 2 different matters as the sites using adwords are not listed together with the normal non-paid searches. So how a site gets to top position in the non-paid search results is independent of adwords.

"Abt the theory of promoting adwords, think its 2 different matters as the sites using adwords are not listed together with the normal non-paid searches. So how a site gets to top position in the non-paid search results is independent of adwords." - When I do a search in G the first listing is a paid one and so are the ones on the side column. Do a search for 'Directory' and see for yourself and then think of how hard it would be to place #1 for that search if you had to do it organically. Add: I just noticed I don't get a sponsored listing on top of all the regular ones everytime...not sure how that works.

"Have u read of reports concerning these angry webmasters? Wld like to read some for reference." - If you look at some of the hard-core (old school) webmaster forums you can deduce it from reading some of their post, or at least I came to that conclusion :)

    Matt,

OK, so what you are saying is you want to shut down every paid directory and all forms of advertising except for Adwords. On top of all that, you want us to do the work for you?

Isn’t that just shooting ourselves in the foot if we decide to help you? I mean all the work we put into our sites to get quality links would end up being just wasted time, as those links may not count now.

Why is it only OK for Goog to get paid for advertising and no one else? The people buying advertising or selling advertising will now be penalized for maximizing their revenue, but that is how Goog makes its money. I am sorry but this is hypocrisy.

If you are so worried about the quality of your index then may I suggest you use something other than links to judge relevancy and quality of the website. Perhaps content and up to date material should count more.

Just be straight with everyone and tell us that you only want us to advertise using Adwords.

Im trying to find the place were Matt himself says a review is different...

    thx

So getting a free review with a paid listing is bad and a free listing with a paid review is good. ;)
