Hi, I have a simple question for the most of you... If i choose a keyword like "weight loss" and create a site using this keyword, something like www.weightloss.com. Is this site automatically rank on first place if the competitors sites dont have this keyword in their url? example Search will be: weight loss Results: 1) www.weightloss.com PR 0 2) www.fatcat.com PR 7 Is this correct? Thanks
It's not necessarily true. The keyword can be in the meta keywords or meta description or site content too. Also, You can have a page like .. www.fatcat.com/weight-loss and it can still rank before www.weightloss.com
Still isnt it easier to rank if you have the keywords in url (for a newly created site)? How can the www.fatcat.com/weight-loss rank before www.weightloss.com? Which are the characteristics that such a url has to rank better? Thanks
It depends on where you are tracking the results. In MSN Live search the domain name with the keywords in the exact order of the search query can carry a ton of weight. Also the closer to the beginning of the URL they are the better as the weight doesn't get diluted by the extra character spaces. If you are monitoring from Google and Yahoo, the domain name isn't as relevant as the off page factors, internal linking structure, the age of the website etc. will affect the rankings differently.
Thanks for clearing it up. So if i want to optimize a site where do i use the keywords except in the url, meta and on articles? I mean which are the "places" to use the keywords i chose? Maybe in description of my site in directories which i submitted it? Where else?
Keywords in URL really helps to get better ranking but it doesn't mean that you can get on top of the SERP. Your rankings would still depend on your optimization.
the main benefit is, that the keyword is bold in the search result, so people are more likely to click on it
The most important factor is relevancy. Anchor text is very important follow by the placement of keywords in your page. The keywords should appear in: 1. Headers tag 2. Domain URL 3. BOLD 4. META 5. Content 6. Images alt description
Thanks for all the answers! KC TAN you were very specific. thx So my last unanswered question is: Do i have to use the keywords i choose in description of the directories i submit my site?
Yes, ideally. Site description should always reflects what is a site about and more than often, it should bear the keywords
Not at all, it dont matter what the URL is the site still has to have SEO done, and lots of backlinks to beat out a PR7!
Yup, keywords in the URL can only help a little, it's the onsite and offsite SEO that really count...
It is not necessarily true. It depends on the keywords or which site your prioritize to optimize or to promote or to rank in the search engine. Here is a useful tips of using keywords in url: http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/08/05/basic-seo-tip-1-use-keywords-in-titles/ Keep in mind that research shows that people search the web a lot for names of products and people and that they are often quite specific their searches. If you’re writing about something specific make your title reflect this.
Yes the there is a lot competition on this keyword... But this was just an example. I am on search for another niche.
It is important to note that people search for things by "what", "where" and "who" for the most part. Using a domain name that is keyword targeted helps you build the overall relevancy of the site if the site is basically targeted towards a particular topic or niche. A "what" domain name is a broad term that helps you funnel targeted visitors to where they really need to be Example: if you had the domain name www.pizzadelivery.com, the term "pizza delivery" is the "what" someone is looking for and the extension could then be the location such as "boston". the url would then read "www.pizzadelivery.com/boston.htm"so now your url is 100% relevant for the search string "pizza delivery boston" If your website is a "who" domain that is well branded like say Coke, or Nike, people will search for your site by the branded name. As an example if the are searching for Nike tennis shoes, they input the search string "nike tennis shoes", the result that could come up would be something like "www.nike.com/tennis-shoes.html." notice how the search string is 100% relevant to the domain name result? Keeping the keyword phrases in the order of the search query in your domain name is a great way to get more highly targeted and relevant traffic. Since people see the search results come up in exactly the same fashion that they sent their search query, you are talking to the person doing the search EXACTLY how they were searching for you. This also helps conversions go way up! Hope that clears this up a bit for ya!
