A more accurate statement would be that editing in most categories is dead. Nobody is saying DMOZ the site is down, they are just saying the listing process is generally not active.

If an editor is acitve and you submit a site today, it can be listed in minutes. If no editor has looked in the category in years than requests for listing will be years old.

That is certainly a better way to put it, I just wish more would put it that way.

What a nice incentive to become an editor ;)

Still we cant get away without it. Since lot of directories and others get data from DMoz, its kind of important to get listed there I guess.

Well, I don't know how effective a link in DMOZ is — but it's not dead. My site was submitted and approved in less than a month. I guess its because the section I submitted to had an active editor.

It's been approved in more than one section now!

Hmmmm, it's not only active for you, it's hyperactive. DMOZ generally doesn't let sites be listed twice. I always thought that they should list topics and not sites since I may have a site that offers ColdFusion applications and information about Google Maps which couldn't be lumped in one directory category.

Your site can be listed many times as long it has content plus you can get extra listing for different languages - hopefully Montenegrin will become available soon. ;)

Applying to be an editor can be as daunting as waiting for your submission to be reviewed. I applied to be an editor of a small category over a month ago. I checked with RZ and they said waiting review. I have since found another directory that was more than happy to let me volunteer my time and effort towards the cause. And I love it!!!

Frankly, I am about over it. They are so backlogged that they can't catch up but no one can look at my application. They probably don't want me anyway. I am sassy, honest and work hard.

If you look at RZ there are a lot of folks waiting to hear the results of their application to volunteer. SIGH

Well they have to make sure that each new applicant isn't a well known spammer, troll, one of previously removed editors, gworld creating new dozen accounts or certain bunny trying to get back in again - in short everyone is guilty until proven innocent! :D

And if you do become editor you have to go through the same process each time you apply for new category!

OTOH editors removals work ASAP! ;)

Very interesting thread! I was beginning to feel like they just didn't like me. I've submitted three sites to DMOZ and none have been listed. My submissions were right at the time they were back up after their downtime, so it's been about 4 months. I'll stop holding my breath in hopes to get listed there. I kept reading in their forum on how they list in two weeks...reminds me of that movie "The Money Pit" when they asked how long 'til the house was done...."Two Weeks"...

The only way to get listed with DMOZ these days is to find an editor that accepts paypal.

Paypal for not to be obvious it says on the website and states as

    Donations

    Excerpt:
    1. If you think the site is informational please Donate for the cause or project.
    or it states like this.
    2. Please Donate for research.

You just have to look for it and I always thought you were RESOURCEFUL.

Too frustrating, for sure. They are not legit. You can talk to know one. Image if you were at Target and could not ask a question to an employee.
