Is submitting to directories useless?

I see so many offers in the service forum for "500 directory submissions" or 100, or 1000, etc..

is this all just junk? or are directory submissions actually any good for SEO and search engine placement?

I've paid for 100 of these for a few of my sites from a bunch of people in the past and didnt really notice a change in anything.

i'd just like to see some views on these services and if theyre actually of any use?
    thanks
    :)

I think it depends on what directories. Some have redirection links and have no real page rank for your site. Others do not have pages spidered by google after a few pages deep.

Some directories add page rank and some do not.

If you choose good directories, your links could be valuables.
But don't try to increase your links too quickly, submitting to hundreds or thousands of directories. Search engines could see that as unnnatural linking and could put your site on their sandbox.
IMO the best way is submit to directories gradually, and using different titles, and descriptions.
And submit other inner pages of your site, not only your homepage.

    Many specific directories are good.

Sometimes 10 quality relevant directories are better than 500 or 1,000 directory submission.

    Choose wisely, live well.

It is not that bad, ajsa. First of all, the directories will not confirm your submission at the same time, second, the SE spider will not crawl their specific pages at the same time. Practically, that means that you can submit to any number of directories, even via an auto-submission service (but lots of directories do not like it) without being penalized by Google or other SE...

Directory submissions are good ,but when you pay for 100 directories are you sure they all accept your link? I think rejected links too count in your 100.

Directory submissions are not as good as quality links, but may help you if you have cutthroat competition.
When there is high competition everything helps.

for ranking you can heavily depends on one thing, if any one things links from directory will heavily help, they result will not be so. besides ranking is beating competiton, you have to do more than your competion is doing ,

directories with "no follow" is useless and also with non relevant categories is useless..

few might also say that dir of PR 0 are waste..bt i suggest that even PR 0 is recommended as it might update (i;e PR) in future..

overall it helps you get backlinks and helps you give a push to market it

Even if the directories have the nofollow attribute, some people actually look into them and click the links so you still get something: traffic. :D

the directory submission is worth a lot, you get a backlink, most directories give you a valid backlink and don't add nofollow! some do, but then only a few!

you get traffic, not much but then after submission to 1k directories i used to get a few hundread hits, not too much but then still good enough.

the anchor text get's weight, and helps in the search rankings:)

Directories with high PR would really help.
But i think the best advantage in submitting to directories would be "backlinks".

They definetly help but arguably not as much as they used to years ago. Its still worth the time to submit though but won't help you as much as say a blog link above the fold from a high pr site.

IMHO, quality dir linking is definately better than blind linking...
one PR2 dir linking is definately better than 20 PR0 dir linking. :)
