Seriously. I keep hearing people talk about it, but can't figure out what it is.

In a nutshell: It is a virtual payment system where every $ traded is backed by real gold.

Its an online payment processor much like paypal but is backed up by gold. The upside is there are no chargebacks. If you get paid you stay paid. but the downside is you cant ask for a refund no matter how valid your reason is.

Thanks. I'm starting a contest soon, and am exploring payment options. I can't figure out if I should trust e-gold, or how much it would cost me or the reciever of funds to do so.

I definitly agree with you. Paypal is the most popular mode of payment than all other methods.

E-gold is the only tangibly backed worldwide electronic monetary / payment system. E-gold is issued by e-gold Ltd.,a Nevis corporation, 100% backed at all times by gold bullion in allocated storage.

True, Paypal is the best, but for some only e-Gold or MoneyBookers are available, so you can consider e-Gold as well if you want your contest to be viewed by much more members.

I'm ignorant when it comes to e-gold. I'd need to be convinced. I checked out the site, but it's simplicity and web1.0ishness about it makes me nervous about every word I read. I might be willing to trust it only because so many people do.

Do you have to put money in an account or something? Like, if you won, how do I get my money in a form that I can give it to you, and then how do I give it to you?

You actually need to find an exchange person to put money in your account and from there if you want to send somebody money you just send to their account the sum that you want.

No. I meant like persons from this site, for instance. Also, on the egold site you can find some exchange providers. Here's the link: http://www.e-gold.com/unsecure/links.htm
Also here you can see other sites that use eGold.

yeah i would pick Moneybookers or Paypal and these are widely accepted.

paypal is more accepted than moneybookers or any other.

i would suggest you to have a paypal account rather than any other.

well its up to you ... you can choose whtever you want to.

What I still don't get is how exactly one is to directly buy e-gold.
They don't sell or buy it directly on their website.. So how do their resellers get ahold of it?

I once was in need of a few hundred for a fake ID I was buying.. I searched EVERYWHERE to buy e-gold. I could never find it.

It seems a bit phishy to me. I know its legit and all, but still doesn't seem right.

Probably Omnipay is their exchange company. Here's a quote from the site:
