I had to use Vista at my parents house for a weekend and it gave me a headache.

I'm happy to see that Dell has gone back to giving the option for XP on new computers.

A bit off topic, but would you still swap over knowing what you do now?

I got Vista with a new DELL laptop, so far have never faced any problem.
Not sure why people without understand how to use it get irritated:p

It's funny to see somebody much more intelligent than me (apparently) take offense to a comment made about an OPERATING SYSTEM!

Mankind has reached a new low!

It was a mere joke that I'm sure everyone understood except you. Please stop regurgitating information you read or listen to and play it off as your own, unique intelligence.

    Vista Rocks!!!
I'll more than happily admit that microsoft may have on a couple of occasions bent the truth slightly, but it still is a really stable operating system. It is more secure and I have to admit that the UAC did get on my nerves rather a lot after a couple of weeks, but the new help system did make it much easier to find out how to disable it. The control panel also does seem to be slightly harder to get my head around than the XP one, but now that I have got my head around it, it works quite well.

The drivers on Vista are pretty amazing! You can plug 90% of peripherals in and the drivers are already loaded onto your system and you can install your peripheral without any discs or downloads. Furthermore if you try and install a driver and it isn't compatible with vista, then you try again and it crashes again then vista is intuitive enough to work out how to install it with compatibility for xp or any system back to 95. So in effect Vista has more compatibility with previous versions than XP does.

Yeah, Macs... hmmm they are great to some extent, however it would be unfair to say they are amazingly great, they have problems as well, Random Shutdown Syndrome for one. Having said that I do know a lot of people who use Macs and love them, but then they do admit that in reality it is incredibly worthwhile to have a windows computer at the same time to ensure compatibility with all programs.

There are also problems with Vista and I will happily admit that unlike the official microsoft line, the dreaded Blue Screen has in no way been removed from Vista, and I have got loads since i swapped over, then in reality that is more due to the way I use my computer, as I have got much less than I was having before.

In all fairness I think it is a pretty decent operating system, yeah it can use up quite a bit of resources, however it is doing much more than XP and I can still run it and when I'm not activley playing games or anything my CPU is still idling quite low at about 10% but then my computer is pretty new. It really is a matter of personal preference to choose whether you want to switch over.

    Basically though, I love it!

    Thanks Diarmuid

I agree with a lot of you on this thread. Just tweak a few settings here and there - Vista will work like none other.

I only have 512 MB of RAM and I could even play FIFA 2007 on this - and you call Vista a Resource hog :)

Ofcourse - things are going to eat more and more resources with every new release - but hey - thats how new products are thrown into circulation. Thats how the life cycle of computer systems would continue.

If we didnt build programs to use all the CPU ( and still demand more ), we would still be using old 486 computers and playing Price of Persia over there.

VISTA IS VERY, VERY GOOD !

All you need is a good security suite along with vista ( zonelabs works nice ) and your system would be pretty secured for most users, unless you go on visiting the filthiest of xxx sites :p

    Have fun guys : )

    and oh yea ..

I never got to use a Mac, so - i would stay out of the Mac-Crowd :p

Macs are the best right now, Microsoft better get there act together. Vista sure doesn't look like it took 5 years to make, more like 1 year.

Have you tried Vista? No offense, but most people that say that haven't tried it. It's not that bad. The aero interface adjustments are really nice and it looks much more organized than previous operating systems.

I have used Vista and would agree with GOW. Microsoft took way too long to make such a mediocre upgrade. Some may complain and say that Mac OSX upgrades are not worth it, but Apple put out 4 or 5 versions in the time that Microsoft released one.

My next computer definitely be a Mac.

I have used Vista.. I liked it.. but really I agree with Gow, its not like an OS thats taken 5 years to be built. Apparently Ms engineers were lost while developing the Vista. What makes me disappointed is MS failed to keep its promise to deliver more robust new file system winFS. over all Vista scores slightly over XP and its Aero GUI is really awsome.

Well the reality is that it didn't take them 5 years to make this. They started over in 2003 and threw out everything and started from the Windows Server 2003 code base instead of the XP codebase they were previously attempting to develop from. Vista was finished and the enterprise version was released in late 2006, so really we're talking less than 3 years of actual development.

For 3 years it's decent, but the really needed to ditch the aging NTSF system, like they had intended. They also should have worked on stream lining the system for performance. Vista runs decently, but if they would've made performance a priority, I'm sure they could streamline the Windows NT code base into something a bit more utilitarian while still giving us the eye candy, since that all rest on the GPU now anyway.

Also, they should have made both Vista Basic and Classic mode run in Direct X 7 so that the GPU would still render them, leaving the CPU to other tasks. This would insure that even the most ancient graphics card could run on Vista.

Vista is a very crude operating system compared to something like Linux.

Mine had a base score of 3.0, too. That was because the video card brought the score down. The best score I got, I think, was 4.5 or something for hard drive read speed.
