Question about free domains for life

Is it true that I won't need to renew my domain when I transfer it to a new host and the plan says that the domain will be free for life as long as I host with them?

    Thanks!

I've never heard of that before. Which company are you talking about?

Lunarpages also offers this... I just need clarification if the domains would be really free. :D

Depends on your hosting, I have never tried lunarpages but I have domains free for life at Servage and Netfirms and they are really free.

At the renewal date you get a message saying that they have paid for one more year of renewal and wishing you to enjoy :)

As told before, no idea with other hosting providers though

They cover the reg.fee from their monthly hosting price
Unless ICANN decides to allow registries to continue their demands for price increase i think this model can work

After all hosting and ssl and ... is what makes money for these guys and not domain names

Yeah, they bump up the hosting so it covers the "free" domain...same as those "50% off sales" in jewelry stores where everyday they've got these type of great discount sales

Hehe. If you want a "free domain for life" go find ten of those 2.95 dollars registrars and then transfer your domain a few times paying every time $2.95 fee. At the end for a little more than $20 you get a domain registered for the next ten years. This sounds much better then staying for the next ten years binded to a blood - sucking host.

Depend on what you mean with blood sucking host.

Netfirms and Servage offer excellent hosting services that worth every cent your pay for. That is much better than paying $2.95 each time hypothetically...

After purchasing a $2.95 domain at Yahoo (the only one offering) they will charge $9.99 for the renewal and there is no place offering transfers at such price, not to mention that Yahoo charges you anyway after a transfer if you don't cancel your account.

Another point to take into consideration is the hosting, if you are going to pay $2.95 for a domain name and then a cheap hosting service it is more likely that you find problems at some point ending up paying 5 or 6 different hostings through the year, fact that rises dramatically the cheap domain you paid for.
