there are many ways to promote business, some work for one, but don't work from others.

It is more achievable if it reads:

    5000 pageviews/month, with $1 million, in 1 year :D

But in all seriousness, I would try to get some off-line advertisments going to be less dependable on search engines.

    Here's the thing..
I read it as 'page views' and not unique visitors. And to be honest, it's not all that impossible to achieve. You will need a number of sites, and if page views are your goal, (and not necessarily uniques), you can set up a few galleries of images etc associated with popular search terms. I can cite at least one example where I did this, and met my objectives, but pulled the box down in the process (too much overhead, it was stupidly set up on a shared host, MSN rolled their beta out to production, and wham !). So don't overlook your hosting resources.

The site above climbed to well over 500K page views before going south. If you want unique visitors in those numbers however, it's an entirely different ballgame.

Basically, if you generate revenue per impression, it's dooable. If by conversions, well, I won't repeat what everyone else has already said :)

    Cheers,

    JL

You can do it for nothing if you have the right site.

I think the difference between $5K and Nothing is pretty close. I would spend the entire 5K on some sort of brand recognition campaign. If you truly can get labor for $100/month and they speak good english, an astroturf campaign might be in order. Otherwise, the funds should be spent on one or two high traffic resources that can help put the word out.

Getting those kind of page views is all about having a quality site. There's no cheap advertising that will bring you those numbers.

I think everyone has missed a crucial aspect of this.

All we need is page views? And you can hire labor that cheap? I would hire 10 people, and have them posting in my forums. Forum will get you huge page views, and with that many dedicated people posting, you will have a great influx of people.

Then I would have them go to other forums and post with my forum in their sig. 10 posts per forum and you are set!

Shouldn't be too hard, did you want to send the money by check or money order?

It takes money to make money. Our clients generally spend a minimum of $500k per year on their promotional materials, and all of those materials push their websites. Of course, our smallest client still does more than 1 million pageviews a week.

It may be possible, but I think it's short-sighted. You generally get what you pay for, and I can't imagine an ROI on $5k being that high.

We have one client who ignored our pleas to spend more in online promotion a couple of years ago and now they're paying for it by having a competitor come out of nowhere in sales. Now they've basically written us a blank check to get them back to where they were a couple of years ago.

I think it's possible to do and I will tell you how.

    1) Start with a few sites that already have a decent pagerank - I sometimes have some of these available for a small fee :)

    2) Decide what you want to sell on these webpages - possibly something that matches the names of the site.

    3) Plan 2 or 3 viral marketing campaigns - for example humourous flash presentations or goofy videos that will appeal to your target audience and they will email to everyone they know. put your sponsored by message before and after the presentation.

    That's the direction I reccomend.
I have seen it work really well recently.

    regards,

Another idea is to make a contest where you will give $5,000 to the first person who can bring you 1,000,000 page views (and qualify what kind of views etc.),

It's not hard to do. I have a car forum, that's specific to an exact make model and generation. After 6 months i was getting 150k pageviews a month and my only cost is hosting :)

I reckon if you sat at your computer refreshing the page all day then you could probably get those pageviews for free. Bit of a boring way to achieve your goal though ;)

I'd take the $5k and buy a used 450IL or a used Sportster, then spend time working on my site and promotion, without spending a dime outside of my time that is.

one of the sites i run receives between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 pageviews a month and i have spent no more than $200 on the site including registering the domain name

the key is that it has quality content and a forum related to the subject of the site, it's a subject that only a few thousand people would be interested in (music in a particular area), it has been online for 5 years and established a great user base and membership area. it only has pr3 and no more than 100 backlinks

It can be done in one month. But you need to have to good website.

If you website generate 20 pagesviews/visitors (like myspace or some forums).
    1 millions page/view -> 33 000 day -> 1650 visitors/day
0.10$ on Adsense (or other ads) per Visitors = 5000$/months.
