They often peddle dribble about how 'PageRank is a uniquely democratic way of rating different web sites' and similar bollocks. If people buy links it kind of messes up the democratic nature (not that it's truly democratic anyway, but that's by the by).

They're concerned about people buying links for PR value - not traffic.

    Probably not - yet.
There's been lots of discussion here over the past few days about how Google intend to clampdown on people buying links for PR value. The trouble is they don't have an effective way of detecting which links are paid and which aren't, which links are for PR and which are for traffic, so they're relying on 'tip offs' from members of the webmaster community. They are talking about penalising webmasters in the future, but it's really just rumour at the moment - they need to get their detection sorted out before they start hitting people.

Google has stated for some time that it does not like link sales. The difference more recently is that they now claim to have more capability ot pick up on link sales.

There will be many cases where it is clear to see, such as links under a heading "Sponsors", or websites listing sites with links for sell. But there will be a lot of cases where big G can not see the difference, this is where they are hoping to get feedback from people telling them that links are being sold, etc.

As to why they don't want link sales, its because it distorts their search results which they want to control. It also undermines selling their adsense - if you can buy SERPS positions with links then you will not need to pay for adsense!

that link advertisement is cool? its more control over traffic, and possible high payouts for both partners.

    Congratulations Google!

First you make us get rid of all the beautiful designs of our sites, changing images to text so it can be crawled then making us put lots of content on pages instead of a nice neat 2 lines of text, now we just load our sites with junk text that is stuffed with keywords and semantic phrases.

Remember we must do this for SERPS reasons, I couldnt care less about PageRank.

Now you are going to draw traffic away from my sites! My sites are useful resources that point people to niche information they are looking for and the automotive industry are behind me all the way. Now google is telling my customers not to use my service as paying to be listed on my site will have some kind of negative affect.

For god sake! Stop trying to screw the good guys Google. Let us battle with the spammers! The SEO community has learnt a lot and are capabale of handling the issue. Let us report spammers and your job be to check the sites we post.

google can not stop your traffic except the traffic fro google itself. I dont think google will penalize people just for selling link as a sponsors or partner links. I think they will aim more for those link farm that sell the link space for bulks of links in one page/site. If they really do penalize all, many people will hate them and it will be a good time for competitor to come and steal they customers. google should not be that stupid.
