From SEO stand point of view, Do sub domains have some advantages ?

for example, for domain name: www.xyz.com

I want to add a forum want key word "forum" good in search engine, there ere two ways:
    (1) www.xyz.com/forum
    (2) forum.xyz.com

Which one is good ? or same?

    Thanks in advance

I doubt this makes a difference to SEO, but from a user perspective I am used to seeing forum.domain.com, and it ie easier for me to remember these fro repeat visits.

google will consider both as a different things.as far as SEO is concern than u will go for domainname/forum if your domain name is old and have good pr.so your forum will get the benefit of your domain.but if your domain is new and u want to start forum than forum.domainname will be more preferable.

    if you have a a sitename/forums

wouldn't search engines count that as additional pages on your domain....where as a subdomain is seen as a separate domain

Subdomains are good for new sites because it is easier to optimize, if your site is aged and has obtained enough PR, you may focus on creating a forum in a folder. :)

As everyone said, if your site is already established, use a subfolder. If it is a newer website, use a sub-domain.

Subfolders are usually recommended as the inbound link ranking factors of the whole domain will be used more effectively, rather than diluting this between multiple subdomains.

Maybe SEs treat them as different domain names.

so why not to use subdomain

Just don't use both! If exists, make sure to check if one is indexed already. Both used will cause duplicate filter probs... :)

Oh! Also make sure to use .htaccess to 301-redirect to one or the other, or some SEO might come along and try to dup your own site into the supplementals. (oops, happened to me )

Who said Google consider a sub-domain name and domainname/forum same. It is well accepted that google consider each sub-domain name a new domain name. not domainname/forum. So from point of view of SEO, both hold different meaning. When you are building a big resource site you must use domainname/forum as all content added into this will be counted for domainname. But when you are using sub-domain it a entirely new story.

Sub domain is good for forums or a sub script. There are good example of it like DP then mail.yahoo.com and many more.
Sticking to sub domain will be a good Idea.
