first domain - what kind of proof?

I am buying my first domain now and was just wondering what kind of proof (of ownership) do I get when I make a purchase? do register send some kind of certificate/papers or is it only by online account access?

 

well when you buy a name you fill out all your information and this becomes your whois information.

Goto whois.net and type in any domain name . . .you can find out who owns that name.

Certificates and papers don't really play a role.

I keep photocopies of all email correspondence/payments etc.. as well as printouts of the WHOIS.

 

when I go to a store to buy something I get a receipt.
what kind of "receipt" I get when I buy a domain?

pay with paypal and you always have the option to get a refund. Hey man, it's just a $6.99 purchase, not some thousand dollar purchase.

 

it's not about the money. I don't want to work on my domain and then have it "taken away"

 

If you register UK domain names, Nominet will send you via snail mail a printed certificate as proof your ownership and serves for other purposes managing your domain though its active life.

Austrian domain names provide you with similar certificate, but in digital format that you can download immediately and print.

 

For other domains, since you purchase via the web, you will get an email-based receipt for your purchase.

You can always do a Whois on the domain name and print it out for your reference. As long as you furnished accurate information, there is no reason why the registrar would take the name out of you. Just make sure that you pay for all renewals in time and if possible, register it for more than a year and set it to auto-renew. Also ensure that you keep your password to your domain name registrar safe and all domain names locked.

The biggest issue is that people use fake information and during an audit, they cannot verify the details and they would lose their domain name. When you do a domain name transfer, you will get email notification for your confirmation, sometimes people just ignore that when someone tries to transfer their domain name away from them and losses it. Most cases of losing the domain name is when someone 'forgot' to renew it.

 

If you have purchased from a reseller, keep your receipts ready

 

Another proof of ownership are those bank statements or paypal invoices referring to the exact purchase you are making.

Some registrars detail this information in their receipts.
