    I think SubJunk has his facts straight. He quite clearly said "In my experience" which means that his facts come from his experience...

    How do you verify that directories are 'probably' the best way of getting into the top 10?

    That's what i'm doing and i get a lot of links (even in paid directorys that are now) and this is visible in rankings

    Really? That's interesting, because when I check the links Google shows for my site, I find lots of directory links. And when I use the tool at http://www.backlinkwatch.com/ to check all my links, it shows tons of directory links, some of them with good PR.

    What I find odd is that I have like 4 backlinks according to Google. Worse still is that when i search for links to some of my competitors who rank hire than me, they return a total of 1 and 2. Which I know is all complete rubbish...google link search is nonsense.

    Now this looks like an interesting tool.

    The backlinks displayed in google via the "link:domain.com" are not a full listing...if you verify your website with google's webmaster tools you can then see the full listing of google's cached links for your site.
