Lost $4,000 to a scam development firm

About a year ago I had hired a firm (Carbonon - carbonon.com) to create a site for me. 11 months have now passed and the site is no where near complete. I fired them 2 days ago and requested a 50% refund. They refused. So I have created another site, http://www.carbonon-scammers.com where I have written a review of their service. You can read the full story there.

If you wish to help me out, please comment on this on your blog linking to http://www.carbonon-scammers.com with the text “Carbonon” or “Carbonon Tech”. I want http://www.carbonon-scammers.com to show up as #1 site whenever someone searches for their company name. Thanks.

the front page of your website says you hired them through "gugu.com" ... i assume you mean guru.com?

i was under the impression that guru.com would facilitate disputes between vendors and buyers, but perhaps not? i'd be interested to read about your results if you tried to contact guru.com about this.

You could try to scare them by paying a local (Indian resident) to contact police, and police will visit their office. Don't know what else you can do.

I talked to an Indian originally from Guru.com (but we met on a different freelancer site where he had setup a new account) a while ago, he was very aggressive and arrogant, after selecting him as provider on the site, he started insulting me, calling me stupid American, and i decided not to go ahead and cease any contact with this individual. He had good reputation (feedback) on Guru.com, i could not believe it.

unfortunately i think guru can be gamed like that...set up dummy contracts between yourself and friends, then end up getting very positive reviews from those friends. it is disappointing that some people would stoop so low as to do this, but some people abuse the anonymity of the internet/

    Yes, it was Guru. thanks.

I tried to leave feedback on Guru, but the problem is they only allow you to leave feedback for 60 days after each payment. Since I like to wait until the end to give an overall experience I left no feedback on the persons account. But since the last payment was 4 months ago, Guru has locked the feedback option for this project. I've been talking to them over the last 2 days trying to state my case that I deserve the right to leave feedback, but they have not allowed me to do so yet. Still trying though

Nice idea for revenge. Good luck with the Google bomb. Looks like it won't be too difficult getting #1 for that keyword.

I'd never infer anything illegal but what about going down the route of big guys, baseball bats :) .......... but seriously, if you can find someone with good contacts in there Indian city you could get the police to visit them for very little.

Nobody pays before the job is complete.
Else you could have paid them part by part as the percentage of work is completed.
Which city is the company located? may be a DP member can help you follow up with the company on behalf of you.

Payment was not all upfront, it was paid throughout the process.

I paid 20% upfront, then as things progress I continued to make payments. Back in Nov they refused to continue working until I make another payment. They actually wanted me to pay the rest of what was left, 40% which I refused. They basically stopped working for a few months until we compromised to 20%.

Right after that they worked for 2 weeks than basically stopped. I told them March 2nd that I wanted the site finished by the end of April. They agreed. But they never did anything, which brings me to the current situation.
