You usually don't hear from webmasters of sites with listings accepted in Dmoz. Most of the verbal threads about Dmoz are webmasters who either are not listed or have lost a listing.

That is so true and so very well said!!!

People hate DMOZ because DMOZ accepts sites they like, like non-profit etc;) and most of the webmasters are here for business, nothing free of cost:) so watchaaa think ???

While I was editor most websites I've listed belonged to persons (or organizations) who wouldn't have a single clue what SEO is not to mention DMOZ. Because of lack of even basic SEO most of these websites are also unknown to average surfer and because average surfer also doesn't have a clue what DMOZ is they still remain unknown. :(

I would love to be taught about what is DMOZ ALL about,

From what i see here??? Its that Directory Owners get listed into DMOZ, make a coool thread in DP here, that gets them more n more submissions cos what i've heard or known is that DMOZ is helpful in monetary value of a dir and this n that.... getting listed into DMOZ is a mile stone for them and offcourse it has to be as DMOZ is not very generous in accepting all links!!!Although i myself consider ALive, aviva, and dirsensei to be worth listed in DMOZ, but if its DMOZ policy??? and who the hell knows there Policy???? that they wont accept links or websites like that... why should we blame e'm???

We should blame them because they have control over the site, and not us...

That can be solved very easily, gather about a hundred persons, have them apply for editing in non-commercial categories, have them list thousands of non-commercial, non-spam, content rich websites and they should raise to become editalls and metas quickly (supporting each other), once in power it is piece of cake to remove bunch of other editors who could me a problem in taking full control and in this time next year DMOZ is fully under your control! :D

True, but i would rather administrate a big free directory of my own than take control of a big free directory owned by a oversized company who is finding loads of ways to profit. AOL owns DMOZ i think... i have AOL as a ISP - They are slow, i have 1mbps broadband with them... 62kbps is the peak speed, normally 40kbps...

Why does google take the dmoz listings into consideration when it comes to serps? Or is that just a fallacy?

    PS
Why do you still have aol?

To be honest, it has actually been very reliable recently, and i am stuck with a contract until next Febuary now anyway. Next Febuary, i will consider something different.

It is NOT a fallacy. Google uses the ODP (DMOZ) to feed its own directory. Assumingly, this is based on the premise that it's a human edited "quality" directory. There appears to be a favorable tendency towards ODP listed sites. I have written a good bit about this, with some examples. (search the DMOZ forum for my user name)

Good to see you once again playing freely amongst the butterflies, Eskarina. :) :D

The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.
