Vista 2?!

I have a friend who said Windows Vista 2 is being released next year or in 2008. Is this true? He claims that this will be an entirely new OS, not a service pack update.

He claims that he has 'friends' who work for microsoft and have confirmed this for him.

    Anyone know anything about it?

He's wrong. The next Windows OS is Vienna and that's not coming out for a long time.

That's what I thought. Is there any information to back your statements up? I tried telling him, but he won't believe me. I need some hard evidence...

No. Perhaps he was referring to Longhorn? When is Longhorn scheduled to be released?

Well, it's pretty well known that Vista Service Pack 1 is due in the fall or winter of this year: http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=208 It took only 11 months for Windows XP to get it's first service pack, so this is not unusual. I've read quite a bit about it a few months ago, and there is speculation that the Windows kernel may be updated from 6.0 to 6.1 during this Service Pack. This is inferred, because Windows Longhorn Server will ship in unison, and the Windows Longhorn Server will use the updated 6.1 kernel, which is likely to include performance and security tweaks. If this is the case, then Vista SP1 is as big of release as Windows XP SP2 was a few years ago.

Yes, Vista is Longhorn, but I believe he was referring to Windows Longhorn Server, which will probably get renamed to something like Windows Server 2008

Microsoft has never released anything more complicated than a service pack in that short a time span.

I highly Vienna will be coming out anytime soon. If Microsoft releases vista anything in 2008, it's going to be a service pack.

That's what I've heard as well, although Vista was supposed to be released in what, 2004? I'll believe it when I see it. 2009 probably means 2012.

It's my understanding Microsoft is forcing the bigger integrators like Dell, HP, etc. to stop using XP by the end of 2007, but the smaller OEM's will be able to purchase white box copies of XP until the end of 2008!

I have spent some time reading about vista and comparing benchmarks over at tom's hardware and I can see no compelling reason to get excited about Vista at all. There is simply nothing there that makes my business any better. And I sure don't want to dump a ton of money into software upgrades only so they will run on the platform.

It's going to take some time for developers to come out with "vista" compatible software. One package in particular that I like is Dragon's Naturally Speaking and it is NOT Vista certified, although you can download a version which is supposed to run.

So much for Vista for now. I guess Microsoft needs to make more money, and this is as good a time as any to force the issue.

I do enjoy the PC/Apple Mac Commercials. Even though the real world knows there isn't enough development going on in the Mac World to justify running their platform. At least not for me.
