There are other ways of catching people. I doubt it was because of Vista. If someone was caught because they were using Vista and pirated software or movies, it was probably because they were using a pirated copy of Vista.

Really? I havent heard those rumors but thats a creepy thought. Next step in policing perhaps? 'exponent' is probably right about it being a pirated copy of Vista.

Most of the time when people are downloading warez or whatever it's your ISP that caught you, not Microsoft.

Yep. Using a firewall (or even better, a packet sniffer) you can see everything that enters and leaves your computer. Believe me, if there were any truth to this rumor it would be all over Digg, Slashdot, the Inquirer and every other computer site. This in turn would spread like wild fire, and before long very few people would want Vista, and many more would demand refunds. You could also expect a class action lawsuit against Microsoft for violating their own privacy and terms of service agreement. It would be a PR nightmare for them.

That's not to say they haven't worked with the CIA/NSA to build in backdoors, but that has more to do with national security than corporate priracy. The UK has worked with MS as well because of concerns about Vista's drive encryption, but according to MS they've refused to put in that backdoor.

I dont think so. Though I've heard people being called up by MS to buy orignal softwares.

I'd imagine that Microsoft collects all kinds of data that we would rather not give them. But in the age of the internet where everything is assumed to be internet compatible what can you do? Not use it?

The local news stations are constantly saying "Visit our website for this or that". Why watch the news at all? It's always old by the time it hits the TV. But at the same time for people who are not into the Internet it's really pretty insulting to keep telling them to go to the website to get the rest of the story when in fact that is the reason they tuned in the first place.

Imagine the repercussions if Microsoft were caught using personal data to do something like what has been implied!

Don't you think that would leak out and be a huge NEGATIVE PR problem. I think that Linux Developers would love that.

Easy to spread rumours especialy where it concerns Microsoft. The NSA part of the story had to do with making Vista compliant enough with their standards to be allowed to be used in secure environments. Basically, you need an operating system that passes a whole bunch of checklists before being allowed to be used in a secure environment. In this case all the NSA have done is work on that with Microsoft.

Do realise, that there is a world outside the US. If the NSA had a backdoor of any sort, it would be found and do you think Microsoft would want to incur the wrath of the EU and other countries around the world? it would in all certainity ruin them for good.

I wouldn't see how it would benefit MS anyway.

As far as what I'm aware of Vista only has things in it to keep you from pirating microsoft products.

Why would they be interested in knowing where people download movies and other warez? I think they'd rather be interested in tracking who gets a pirated copy of Vista.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was true. Vista is such a huge bloated pig of an OS that they could have put a little spying ghost in there somewhere.

This would be all over the web in a huge way if there was any proven truth to it and something like that would seriously injure any industry king.

Well if you're worried, use a packet sniffer and examine your traffic for a week. You can always spoof your MAC address and use Sockscap to permanently be anonymous on the internet. As far as drive encryption goes, do NOT use Vista's. I would be a lot of money that there's backdoor. Use something like TrueCrypt, that's REAL drive encryption.

i'm using Vista and that's true that it can send information if you have any pirated software or etc when your computer connected to internet.Microsoft had enhanced their security for Vista so better do not using any pirated software.
