BIG Flaw with DMOZ

Ok everyone has heard the old adage "He who submits again sends his site to the back of the que" and even "He who submits alot will get labeled as spamming the directory and never get included"

Well what prevents someone submitting their competitor daily resulting in them never having a hope of inclusion as long as they live?

I won't tell you specifics but there are internal tools that prevent that from happening. There is sufficient data that has to be submitted that makes it easy to tell if it is from the same source. :D

I've only submitted my latest websites once. 4 months ago, still looks like they are somewhere at the end of the queue. I tend to believe they need a new directory script to be able to handle 10Kb content verification and inclusion a bit faster ;)

Whois info, plus use an admin@ theirsite email for submission since no validation is done. Takes 2 seconds to run through a proxy based in the owners location if the secret technology is IP based.

    Submission requires this data:

    URL
    Title
    Description
    Email

All this info can be obtained from the competitors website, Meta tags. Now the only other data passed would be IP, User Agent and ISP.

IP- Alot of people have dynamic IPs, outright banning of a site that submits twice or more based on having 2 different IP's would kill alot innocent sites from possible inclusion.

User Agent- Many people change browser/OS between 2 valid submissions or have 2 PCs, again it would impact severely on valid submissions.

ISP- Again, people change ISPs between 2 valid submissions, submit a second time from work etc.

Interesting technology you have there, especially if the competition is new and hasnt submitted yet so there is no existing data to cross check against.

Have at it...just make sure you are sending multiple submissions to a category with an editor otherwise you are just wasting your time.

And if you spam a category that has an editor, according to most of the threads here it's still a waste of time. Didn't you say you've submitted hundreds of sites and only a fraction of them got accepted? At that rate, the best way to get in and keep your competition out would be to create a site that would make the editors want to include it, rather then hope multiple submissions would keep other sites out.

You have me wrong, i would NOT submit anybodys sites in the manner i stated.

I just wonder if what i said is the cause of alot of people who really deserve to be in the ODP, yet years later and still no inclusion.

But the funny thing is that when they reveal the URL for the site, they have a site that does not meet the criteria to be listed despite their claims they really deserve to be in.

Does this includes mistakes by editors whereas they have included some sites in the directory then few days later it gets deleted for some reason ?

The post has nothing to do with an individual site meeting "the criteria", but rather the poor authentication of submissions.

I'm interested in this "technology" in place to prevent what i said from occuring?

Speaking of criteria, if the tables were turned and ODP submitted to my directory the only category i'd accept it in to was Antiques>>Outdated websites. The only thing it's got going for it is the 100's of sites that copy the content.

Yes. None of your directories should have been listed in the first place, so the error was corrected and they were removed.

May I ask the criteria of directories that are supposed to get a listing ? Outdated criterias don't benefit this category. You might be good on all areas and other editors but these are slightly different.
Seems to me you know a lot and I have already a VERY GOOD IDEA WHO YOU ARE. Judging from your POSTINGS. ;)

What time in your AREA. :D

    *Cough* *Cough* Pffft.

Ok then I always like you in the first place since the very beginning. ;)

Cheers Mate and hope to share a spot of tea sometime in the future.

No best way is to create a fake company websites which claims that at lest half of websites listed in a category is owned by them, submit that website and after a month if that websites does get listed without removal of all the other websites listed as owned by them you can file abuse report, you can also file abuse report if doesn't get listed and claim that company has multiple listings. ;)

What we can do is to have a friendly discussion here. About your criterion on directories. Theres nothing to lose right. It will be your gain since there would be an outside idea. Just let us know as we could help to insert FRESH INNOVATIONS. The World is changing you know and you might not realize that.

DMOZ and changes? If brizzie left because he couldn't do anything they will listen to removed editors for sure. :(

In a World when things changes daily, DMOZ can take weeks just to approve new editors or new categories, months and years for obscure categories to get maintenance, only thing that moves fast is delisting of websites belonging to persona non grata.

Possible best thing would be to merge DMOZ into Wikipedia since that would solve Wiki spam problems and since only approved links would get listed we would no longer have the need for anti-spam crusaders trashing articles.

Ok Ivan. Heres my question about directories category. Since my FAVORITE MARTTY. :D Said it was removed as it does not belong there.

What are Criterias of content for directories ?

Many editors will say that you have to have some 3000 up listings to qualify. I say that is an old qualifications. I could certainly populate my directory even with 6000 listings in just few hours. Download it and upload to specified categories. Its not a big of deal to do that. But where is Quality Listings supposed to go.

    That's just for now. ;)

I find it strange no editors have stepped up to the plate to squash webmasters concerns that their submissions arnt being sabotaged due to DMOZs poor authentication.

What exactly are you wanting to hear? Let me try and take a stab at it:

To be labeled a spammer one would have to do 'a lot' of submitting, so why would someone waist their time doing it just to 'prevent' someone else from being listed? Most people with a basic knowledge of things realize that dmoz is just another link so the effort really is a waste of time as it won't magically increase income or mysteriously drive a competitor out of business. The que is not a line its more of a pile, so while the new submissions would replace the older ones it would only be a problem if the editor chose to look at the sites by suggestion date. Many editors do not go in order of date received, rather choosing to work on the most likely listable candidates or the easier rejections.

So nothing prevents someone from submitting their competitor sites but it would be a meaningless waste of time and even the shadyest of sorts would be too lazy to worry that much about a single competitor listing.
