I saw someone selling links on 100 websites, spread across 50 IP's. Can someone please explain how this is done? So he has more than 1 hosting account? Thanks for any help.
Most hosts will sell you additional IP's, but you really want to have different class "C" IP's if you want to cross link sites. This usually means different hosts, although I saw that hostgator is going to be offering different class "C" IP's within the next few weeks. As a registrar, google has the ability to check ownership of domains (which they mention in their patent) so they could also discount or ignore cross links from sites that are owned by the same person. Right now, they assume links from the same IP or class C are from related ownership.
I've read (don't know if it is a fact) that whois only hides the data from the public, but that top level registrars (like google) can see all the information. Aaron Wall has said that a bunch of sites linking to each other, all with private whois or the same registrar could be a red flag to google.
Google is not a top level registrar...just a f'kin multi-billionaire company...they can't get past private whois; just like you and me. Yes, if you register domains from multiple registrars with whois privacy, you're all set!
thanks for your help guys. So the guy who is spread across 50 IP's really means that he has 50 different registrars?
No, it means 50 different IP addresses. All the sites could be hosted on one server using different IPs. You would need to ask if they were on different class "C" IP's. Think of an IP address as a telephone number - all the numbers could go to the same location or 50 different locations in the same building, or 50 different states. He could have one hosting account, a number of hosting accounts, or 50 hosting accounts. If this person owns all the sites, it is highly unlikely that they are with 50 different hosts.
I beg to differ: Source: http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2005/01/31/google_is_now_a_domain_registrar.html
To answer your question here is who I use for multiple class C IP networks. www.gotwebhost.com You can always go through different hosting companies to get this or get your hosting company to assign you more IPs (I know hostgator will) though.
