About the reference to Ishmael and Abraham in Koran. Nowhere in the Koran, has the person laid on the sacrificial alter been named. Since Ishmael was an Arab ancestor, the Muslims conveniently claimed him to be laid on the sacrificial altar.

Hagar fled from Sarah and ran into the wilderness, where an angel appeared to her. The angel also said to her: You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery. dilipsam: A little background: Abraham was married to Sarah. Sarah couldn't have a child so she told him to go sleep with Hagar. Hagar is who gave birth to Ishmael. God later gave Sarah the ability to have a child and she gave birth to Isaac. The confusion comes from the fact that God calls Isaac Abraham's only son yet Ishmael had already been born to Hagar. That's why Muslims assume the Bible is wrong and Ishmael was the son that was sacrificed. Ishmael was circumsized at the age of 13 (ouch). Issac was circumcized at the age of 8 days which is when male children are supposed to be circumcized. In essence, Abraham disowned Ishmael. If Abraham cared about Ishmael he would have circumcized him at 8 days old as well. Even God didn't see Ishmael as Abraham's son because Ishmael was an illegitimate child. So yes, Isaac was his only son. The one he loved. It's that resentment that lives on today. The Koran even teaches that Jews and Christians are not children of God.
