    Two suggestions:

    1) Google wants the search engine to give the best results, the highest quality content. The only way to count this quality a combination of two factors: a) counting the backlinks, which probably show that the site is really of a high level, and that is why other sites link to it. And b) Using some rules to decide (by using bots) whether the content can be high quality.

    2) Google tries to avoid link sales in order to get the money that webmasters spend for link sales for adwords.

In the second suggestion the google is really the "big bad guy". In the first suggestion the google tactics can't be effective, because it uses just bots that can't say if the content is really the king or if the links are natural.

It is a bit confusing. If the link buying is accepted, then a crap site can grow by just spending money, but this is what we call "advertisment". If the link buying is prohibited, then an unknown site is probable to remain unknown and the only choice seems to be the google adwords. I admit it is a bit fasistic, to force us use only its advertising system.

    fffff :S

Every time I read about this topic, there is a single logic that seems correct to me....

what is the google pageranking algorithm based on???

    thats simple.. Links.

Well they made a good concept, the forgot to work the way we could beat in time... hence yes they are figuring and testing how to screw people over who are beating their algorithm... but there is something else too... we are still ahead in the race...

Co-relate a website to a newspaper or a magazine or real-estate for that matter... going by that I would say this...

Newspapers are immoral people... they direct people to products and at times the ads are immoral... They are immoral because they write would write about somebody's company if he knew how to get in touch with the...

    Same goes for magazines... etc...etc..etc...

As a matter of fact advertising will also be unethical if thats the correlation.

    ..............................................

The other reason you could be saying this is because google pagerank technology is based on links...

Now they have become the big brother watching over things... and a link sold is a higher chance for a better searchrank/ pagerank.

But here the deal... again... if its immoral.. then why do people bother talking about applying the marketing mix on the internet.

Marketing Mix = 4 P's of Marketing = Product, Price, Place and Promotion

    .............................................

If this is the virtual world, you have the right and freedom to do what you wish... immoral was the wrong word to use....

    anyways maybe thats just me...

    Cheers!!!

Ant time that I evaluate a new "rule" I try to step on the other side and see if that rule can be sued as a weapon. If Google follows through with their plans to devalue links from certain "SEO sites" then it would be fairly simple for me to use that against my competition. All I would need to do is buy text links from these "bad" sites and then file a complaint with Google.... BAM.. bye bye Mr. Competition.

Well that would be the only way that they could effectively pursue link trading. If the value of the links are diminished then people will no longer buy them.

I really do not think that this is the end of off-site SEO. Google has to do what they need to do in order to preserve the quality and the effectiveness ofthe index.

This is just an evolutionary lurch along the continuing time line of changes.

    we will adapt and overcome.

What possible way would google have to punish link sellers? None that I can think of. It's link buyers they are going after.

and I can't think of any way that they can do this without creating a weapon that people can use to knock a site out of the index...

"What possible way would google have to punish link sellers?" - They could take you out of their index and take away your page rank, most folks don't want to buy links from a site that is not indexed nor ranked by G.

That isn't really ethical to do on google's part though. Those would definitely be grounds to boycott them in that scenario. I would have no issues putting up yahoo or msn search boxes on ALL of my domains.

"That isn't really ethical to do on google's part though." - I agree it would be biting off the hand that feeds them. But if they don't want their search results manipulated by folks buying links then they could do it.

The real problem would be having proof that a link sale actually happened, since they won't have access to any financial records to prove it they will have to make assumptions based on people advertising and then you fall into the whole problem of someone making a fake account offering links for sale on one of their competitors sites in order to have them removed from G's search.

Really I don't think they will be able to do anything about it, right now, with the report feature they are just trying to quell some of the vocal complainers.

I have few questions regarding all that:

    - Any company that releases a PR then is BUYING links? (because it costs like $600 for a good PR campaign and it generates A LOT OF LINKS)

    - Should Yahoo! paid directory be delisted?

    - Should all the top sites on text-link-ads be delisted?!

You know it's really hard to get to the top... but oh boy it's gonna be even harder when they fall back down.

Hey, let us give some credit to Google, folks ! After all it is the biggest and the best search engine on the net today and they have arguably the best method of getting you that crucial information that you require.

What is the primary goal of a search engine ( in this case Google ) ? To bring you the most relevant and most important results to you so that ' you ' as the users are benefited to the maximum extent.

If they weren't able to do this effectively, you would never know about the content hosted on Wikipedia, Youtube, Download.com or those ancient tribal people at Colombo !

Nothing can explain this better than that single telephone number you are looking for in an emergency and you are not able to get it anywhere else. Imagine what would happen if some less than scrupulous quacks brought up their page first by buying paid links ! ( Not that it is going to happen ! It takes a lot more than just buying up links to come up first in SERPs )

There are thousands of other similar causes for which a search engine is being used everyday and if they don't do their job effectively, we are the losers not Google, Yahoo or MSN.

Let us not be short sighted and let us give credit where it is deserved gentlemen :)

That's the exact type of attitude they want everyone to have. Kind of an idol worship type of thing. No thanks, i'll remain a skeptic and watch out for the money lining my pocket, not the money lining the pockets at google (and their respective shareholders).

While they may have had an altruistic approach to search in the beginning, you need to remember one thing now. They are a publicly held company meaning the shareholders control the decisions. The only thing the stock holders care about is the rising price of their stock. Google wants them to remain happy, thus the only thing they care about is the dollar.

What better way to raise stock prices and accomplish all of the above then to eliminate everything a webmaster can do to monetize his or her own site short of placing adsense ads on the page and using adwords to drive traffic.

    No thanks!

Google has it's work cut-out, stop click fraud and spammers first (that should take 10 more years), then worry about other stuff.
