I'm not familiar with Stumbleupon. Can you expand on what it is?

Not sure what you mean by "This Guy should be crazy". HIs del.icio.us page is pr6 because his blog is p7 and has links to the del.icio.us page all over it.

Stumbleupon sends a lot of traffic, though it's a really poor quality, you certainly won't get many signups/sales out of it.

It works best with attention grabbing free sites/flash games etc. You could use it to build a community on apps like that, though like I said, they won't be getting their credit cards out. It's also a very net savvy userbase, so they won't be clicking on ads either.

Matt, Stumblers are not always savvy, it depends on the topic of your site...

I've saw quite a bit of traffic from SU. It all depends on what kind of site you're working on. For the most part more "Web 2.0" sites will do better with StumbleUpon. I received over 1,000 uniques to my proxy after having it stumbled, but when I had my drink recipe site stumbled it didn't receive much traffic at all (at first, it has increased since then).

Largely, I agree with Matt on this one. A real-world analogy might be to liken it to a long line of people shuffling past a market stall. Most people will glimpse at the stall without stopping, however occasionally someone might be piqued sufficiently to stop and take a more detailed look or even buy something. SU works like this. I get varying amounts of traffic from 100 to 2000 per day, but very few seem to stay for long - at best if they are genuinely interested in my site(s) they seem to look around them for a little while and perhaps bookmark them before returning to what brought them to the site in the first place: stumbling.

I agree with the market stall analogy. You could take it a step further to compare it to stuff sold near the cashier at a store - it's mostly impulse items, but sometimes you actually find stuff you needed or wanted.

A lot of the stumble upon addicts are the same way - they are looking for the "wow" factor. Even when I used it prior to thinking about building a site, I would thumbs up things I wouldn't necessarily intend to come back to.

1 guy stumbled my site and that day i got 2,000 uniques. He had a huge network.
Others have stumbled pages and i've got 15.
From this i have gathered that it matters who stumbles your site, simply because if you enter into stumble exchanges then you're getting low quality stumbles from people who stumble sites they don't really care about. Stumbleupon 'knows', so even 1 stumble from a genuine, popular, user can send loads of traffic to your site.

    To break this down:
One of my sites recieves around 9,000 uniques a month.
Roughly: 1000 come from google. 2,000 from wikipedia. and 6,000 from stumbleupon.
The site has around 8,000 pages, of around 30 are on stumbleupon.

Stumbleupon can boost your traffic but it depends on the quality of your article that you submit.

    Just to summarize:

To get traffic from stumbleupon its a combination of stuff:
    1. the original stumbler has to have many friends since the stumbler "shows" the stumble to his friends (and sometimes to friends of friends)

    and
    2. The site has to be good/nice/valuable in order to get many uniques ...
    3. It helps if the stumblers friends have similar interests ...

I figured stumble probably works this way:

A stumbler votes up for a site.
Stumbleupon decides to show this to 10 of his friends
    - if everyone of those 10 votes it down the site will not get shown again to anybody
    - if all of them like it and vote it up then it will get shown to 10 more friends and to 50 friends of friends
    - if the people that vote it up are not too many then stumble decides to show it to "not that many"

You understand the numbers are made up but I hope you get the picture.

For example I stumbled my site http://hausfay.com in december and for 1 1/2 month I received about 4000-6000 uniques from stumbleupon (but my friends are only 200 - the maximum allowed) I think people like the pictures and where voting it up.

Let me warn you like other people did, stumble traffic is not worth the trouble, low sales/clicks/signups etc
