how do they do it

I am with inmotionhosting. They can register a domain for $7.95.

I am also with enom.com and they charge $29.70 to register a domain.

Can anyone explain why there is such a large difference in price?

    Thanks,

    Darren.

Registerfly had low .info and .net prices and look what happened to them.
As a reputable company with a quality service, there will be demand.

Most who charge less take a loss to gain your 12 month hosting plan..

Godaddy.. is a prime example .. they make more on the additional stuff than the names.. :)

This is probably true since Godaddy will allow you do register a domain for $1.99 with the purchase of another service.

Price is being set by ICANN, as a 'wholesalers'. Domain name operator can sell it with their own margin, IMHO.

enom.com is a reseller focused registrar
He is the best for protecting his resellers with this "huge" difference as you call it
That way people go get them from his resellers
He is the only respectable big registrar that protects and values domain industry

Now if you compare it with the super-scam-mammy registrar you will understand why domain reselling business is history

The only thing i like about mammy registrar is that he really promotes domains but the same time kills them leaving no room for reseller profit
In nowadays the domains are the cherries to sweeten your taste and buy hosting, ssl, whois protection....

No. Enom don't want to compete with their resellers.

I am with enom, and there customer service is poor. So maybe they are not as great as you indicate. And yes it IS a "huge" difference!

Do you have other reseller above you ?
Usually only the top reseller get priority support
From 2001 i never had a problem but i stopped reselling names because there is no meaning anymore

I think that a domain name costs $6.25, and some registrars offer web hosting too, so they make the more money because of that.
Although any offer less than 6.75 smells ugly...

And that's why I always go with GoDaddy.
With coupon (check this forum regularly), you can only get $6.95 instead of $8.95.

And that is actually the answer to the OP's question. Or to summarize it in 2
    simple words: business model.

Registrars who are in the business of registering and managing domain names
for end-users like you and me have to make money somehow. Some price it
low but offer only email support, others charge high but give a 24/7 toll-free
phone line for arguably the average consumer who hardly understands how
    these work.

So if any of you feel your registrar is charging too high while others are low,
remember that no one's forcing you to continue with them if they're not able
to meet your expectations any longer.
