Hi Everyone This is a question that has been puzzling me for the last couple of days. I've done a lot of research and I can't make a decison. I am going to make a tutorial website and I want to know which is the best to use? I am looking for something I can customise and be easily made SEO friendly What is your advice and why would you choose it? Thanks
It all depends on your needs. They're both good choices. Wordpress is more of a blogging platform, while Joomla is a full fledged CMS. They can both be customized and be seo friendly. If you require CMS features, I'd go with Joomla. It has a longer learning curve than Wordpress, but once you figure it out you can do anything with it.
I've found that WordPress is very SEO friendly and can become a very effective CMS tool, not just a blogging platform, if you make a few adjustments to it.
Joomla is one of the most popular CMS's on the market. You can blog and have articles(tutorials). It is "good", believe me. I run many sites with joomla, including shopping comparison sites. You can do a lot more with Joomla than wordpress, even though you may not need to now, my advice is future proof yourself - you may need to do more later....
Hi asgsoft , Both scripts have a different focus. You say you'd like to create a tutorial site. How exactly? I have seen tutorial sites using WordPress and also Joomla. Here's an example of one that uses WordPress - http://www.tubetorial.com/ With WordPress, your tutorials will be added - blog style i.e. in chronological order. In Joomla, you have more control over the order of your tutorials. You could have a series of tutorials, for example, according to the order you specify. WordPress is a lot easier to use but Joomla is more "feature-rich". Both can be customized and both can be SEO friendly. WordPress is SEO friendly out of the box. With Joomla, you will have to install a plugin such as OpenSEF. It's really hard to recommend one or the other without knowing how exactly you want your site to work. If you have tutorials that teaches someone step by step how to achieve something, Joomla is probably better. If you have stand alone tutorials that don't depend on each other to be understood, for example, tips and tricks, then you may want to go for WordPress. - Bina
Thanks for your tips and advice Thanks to your post I have decided to use Joomla becuase it will be suited to the type of website I have. But before I go live with it I'll be testing it locall first. Thanks again
Hi Bina, I really like what you had to say, but would like to add that for both projects, the focus is blurring somewhat. In many ways, Joomla is moving more blogcentric, while Wordpress is becoming more of a CMS. For example, widgets on wordpress look and behave a lot like modules in Joomla. Moreover, with the addition of a few key components, Joomla can do everything that WordPress does, ie feeds, trackback, etc...
I completely agree, dsendecki. I know a lot of people who uses WordPress as a CMS. I can't say, however, that I've met anyone who uses Joomla as a blog I had this exact Joomla vs WordPress dilemma awhile ago. One the one hand, I LOVED the simplicity yet powerful WordPress. On the other, there were plenty that I wanted done that even plugins couldn't achieve. In the end, I ended up using both . - Bina
infect Joomla takes some time and efforts to have grip over it while WP is quite simple and easy platform so that may be one reason that Word Press users are not gonna leave it or there may be some Wordpress lovers who have worked with Joomla but want to continue with WP!
Mate, it really depends on what you looking for hey. If you looking for ease of use go with WP, but if you looking for power go for Joomla.
Like everyone else has said Joomla is difficult to learn. But because your not really doing a blog I would stick to Joomla rather than WP.
joomla is good and have so many features like blog and u can also install so many components for your eductaion web site .
I've suggested this before.. Why not try Joomla and install the Wordpress extension on it to see how they work together rather than comparing them separately
Wordpress is extremely easy to use, even for unexperienced users and newbies. Whereas Joomla has more of a "frustration phase" in which you try to do the slightest modification and it does not work, of course once you learn to use it and overcome your frustration it is a great CMS. Wordpress can be used for a lot more than blogs (it is like a CMS) and is easy to modify (how categories are displayed, how content is displayed, etc) by someone with html knowledge and common sense.
If you want to integrate your cms with forum and poll, joomla is the better choice, otherwise choose wordpress
