Opinions Needed - Could this hurt a site's ranking?

    Hey,
just wanted to run this idea by and see what everyone thought

For a certain competitive keyword 6 out Google's top 10 all use the same 3rd party template type site.

All these sites use FRAMES and .aspx. The Nav.aspx/Page= is used, and can be exploited on all of them.

Like if i put Nav.aspx/Page=http://www.google.com, it will load Google in the frame page.

If I found a bad neighborhood site, like one that Google will put an "unsafe" label on or is really spammy, and started a backlink campaign for that keyword with the link being hxxp://www.competitor.com/Nav.aspx/Page=hxxp://www.badneighborhood.com

would google associate the content of the bad neighborhood url as being part of the content of the competitor site? And if so, could it cause them to lose their top position?

Just looking for ways to hurry the process along ;)

I doubt it. Besides which, that is black hat and unethical.

The general consensus seems to be that links (even from bad neighborhoods) will not hurt you (or your competitor), though you may not receive a benefit from it. This is because, as you are considering, just because someone links to you, doesn't mean you asked/paid for the link...it may have been a competitor. The danger begins when it can be reasonably assumed that you did arrange for the link to your own site.

Black Hat? not quite. Unethical? LOL.... what does someone who pushes "phytonutrient" snake oil know about ethics?

i understand back links cannot hurt, but that was not the question.

Let me expand it to make sure I'm understood.

If I start a backlink campaign for the keyword they have, this only to get Google's "attention". Google will see this link and follow. I'm thinking Google will see this bad site as a PART of the good site. As in Google will see it as the good site has spammy content, and links to a lot of bad neighborhoods. Therefore dropping it from the top position it has.

    Hello David,

I was not trying to be offensive and do not understand why you are being so rude.

You have attacked my character based on products I sell that you have never tried. The particular product that you mentioned is a very high quality product that I take myself, and have seen excellent results from. I do not sell snake oil products - that would definitely be unethical.

I would appreciate it if you would be polite.

    ~Adam

P.S. David, the DP form rules state that "Personal attacks against people, or sites will not be tolerated. If you have an issue with someone or their site, take it up with them personally."

If you believe that my sites or products are unethical, I would be happy to discuss the issue(s) with you via PM.

Grow a backbone son, I was not attacking you. You said my idea was "unethical". I found that funny considering the product you sell... WHICH IS SNAKE OIL!

The rules also state not to double post or hijack threads like you just have, so lets not be a hypocrite.

I don't need to discuss it with you. It doesn't matter that I haven't tried it. The Surgeon General has said that phytonutrients have NO health benefit. Any product that boasts how it has had all these scientific studies and research to process the forumula, yet has a fine print disclaimer that it has not been evaluated by the FDA is snake oil! I don't care how you try to spin it.

I would imagine that you'd need to give Google some link juice for a large number of bad neighbourhood pages, 1 would be seen as an aberration.

So if you were thinking of 100 links to 1 bad page I'd change that around and make it 5 links to 20 bad pages. I'd also look at how many pages the site had and "20" would need to be a significant % of the site size.

And that all sounds like a lot of hard work for something that may backfire and boost the site or have no effect. Easier, perhaps, to work on your own site?

That is sound advice, but I was just trying to figure out if Google would see that as "part of" of the site in question, or if the algo is smart enough to know that it is another site in a frame.

I know the answer 2 years ago was the algo could not figure it out. A site I had decent serps on back then, was put in a frame as a "section" for another website. That website popped up right under our listing quite quickly, no links or anything.

In general I agree with you. However, I really want to know the answer :D Not to mention it's "personal" with one of them. The scenarios I see as possible are
    a) no effect
    b) the desired effect I am looking for
    c) the url they have listed now would be replaced by the one with the "bad" frame, thus still causing them some grief. ( I have seen instances where another site had their root listed #1 for a city specific keyword, and then the url changed to a news article that had a huge local buzz to it.)

I'd be pretty shocked if it did nothing but benefit them.

Find a benign site that allows that kind of linking. Create a dummy page on your site with a key phrase on your page along the lines of "elursrebmem", create the requisite number of links and monitor.
