MyBB is nice, but the backup is garbage. I would recomend SMF (Simple Machines Forum)

When I actually used free forums, I used phpbb, it's got a lot of nice features...

now I'm obsessed with vbulletin though. May I ask why you want a free one? (buying an owned vb license is only $160...and it's well worth it)

...don't think i'm judging...as i see no problem with wanting free stuff :) just in this case, in my personal opinion...if you want a good forum, vb is the best way to go :)

Hackers think so too. It is extremely targetted by hackers and there are too many horror stories - google it. I had 2 phpbb forums hacked and moved to SMF - never had an issue since.

Yes eventually I may turn to vb, but with funds low and etc..it's not a major need, and is something I can easily upgrade to if I have to. :)

if you have a good host, and update your phpbb when needed, and make sure to use good security practices then phpbb is pretty darn safe...

though i'm not an expert on it by any means...i never had any issues...and i had some pretty big sites with phpbb...with some pretty mean rivals...

(though it's been 3 years...i admit a lot might have changed from my last experience with it)
