I don't understand why gaming servers are sold, I know that people can play online games on them, but how do you earn money from it? Would you ask for a subscription payment or something?
From what I've seen, the owner usually does it out of love for the game. They really do it to have a place for their clan to play and have fun. You could possibly charge a subscription fee, but not many people would pay it.
What amazes me is that one would think that with 1,200+ posts, the person would be a sort of know-it all, but it actually makes me feel good that i dont know either
That doesn't seem like an industry I would be interested to join in...I'm wondering if maybe a gaming forum would setup a server to bring in a substantial amount of members, that would be a smart thing to do... Heh nobody's perfect, everyone learns as they move along
The owner or the clan members pay for the gaming server. Some clans are sponsored so it is easier to afford such things.
I know around 60% of our clients are clans that play in leagues, the other lot plan on joining leagues but just dont get round to it, and a small percentage are just a bunch of friends that game. One gamer with us has 4 Deathmatch servers which is close to 100GB per month. They don't even use it for leagues, just to game. Each clan or person wants to have full control over their game server and thats what they get.
So you run your own servers, how expensive does it cost to get a server running? Also do you know if they have a clan website with forums or something? Also how big are these leagues/clans?
I don't really want to go into the prices that it costs us, but you COULD, get set up for around 2000GB, This would probably include a high spec server, Dual CPU etc, 2-4GB RAM, The control panels you need, a good design for a website and then colocation for your server. You can't limp in with few hundred cause you will surely fail. Yes most clans have forums. When I used to game myself, about two years ago, I was apart of a huge community, www.warriornation.com They probably have around 30-40 Game Servers for all there games. Most probably more.
with the right marketing and the right word of mouth from customers it could easy make a good amount of money
Gamers can easily spend lots of money on games they really like without any ROI. I think it's a good thing, not everything has to be about money
Looks like a good idea, I don't plan on entering it since I'm not much of a gamer and it looks like an expensive field as well!
Because the smaller single gaming server (which usually hosts 20-50 peeps) is constantly full, not to mention it is a recognition thing.
