There is person after person saying that site after site is not listed in the Open Directory Project and I was wondering why. Well, not why exactly, but why you think? What site? What categories are you not getting into? Does that category have an Editor? Did you read the submission guidelines? How new is the site you submitted? Was it submitted during the slight hiatus? *smirk* I'm not asking because I can help, it's more that I'm curious. I've not seen a thread like this, so I'd like to see some of the sites not making it in, and I'd like to hear why the submitters are thinking it was rejected. *shrug* Q
Websites that don't get accepted : Crap. Some submitters don't know what their website is so they just submit to the TOP Category. (Very Common Mistake) It doesn't matter they SEE it from Above and Beyond. No that is WHY MOST OF THEM CRY. Under Construction No, some just submit their sites thinking it could be listed immediately. Because every owners will say that their site is UNIQUE. For the LOVE of SQUIRRELS Only a very tiny percentage would say that their site has a lot of improvements to go.
I am guessing you meant a thread here on dp, cause i have dedicated my entire forum to serve and answer those questions that you raised . Cheers
Count me in on that. Everyday, we think about improvements to be better. That gives me a lot of headaches.
Some may get hurt but that is a FACT. Ouch!!! Ha ha !! Do I sound like it ? If you'll just see my User Info.
Some of dmoz' editors don't even know their categories while webmasters are waiting for Godot to be listed. Webmasters should sign an epetiton to stop Google using dmoz.
I find the animosity against DMOZ a bit strange when no one can answer these questions. I've seen time and time again people saying "I wasn't listed so DMOZ sucks" and to them I now ask, does the ODP suck, or does the submitted page? I'd like to thank Popotalk, who I think did a good job at defining the real issues of the matter...
More often than not, it the site of those complaining thats not listable, thats if they are willing to mention the URL.
With the number of people that have honestly posted in this thread you would be correct! I think it's sad that I posted this a week ago but no one has honestly answered (cept maybe popotalk) yet I've seen post after post in other threads about how DMOZ sucks because they would not list some site or another...
here... What site? http://www.gorankatic.com/ http://www.svijetfotografije.com/ http://www.svijetfotografije.com/eng/ there are few more links I've submitted but there more goodwill gesture since I have nothing to do with them What categories are you not getting into? http://dmoz.org/Arts/Photography/Photographers/K/ http://dmoz.org/World/Hrvatski/Umjetnost/Fotografija/ http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Croatia/Arts_and_Entertainment/Visual_Arts/ Does that category have an Editor? nope Did you read the submission guidelines? yes How new is the site you submitted? one about year and a half, second over two years Was it submitted during the slight hiatus? *smirk* I don't think any of then got rejected they are simply stuck in backlog which is pilling up each day.
Um, ok... What site? notebookforums.com What categories are you not getting into? dmoz.org/Computers/Hardware/Systems/Notebooks_and_Laptops Does that category have an Editor? No. I tried to volunteer, but was turned down with a generic response that didn't describe any reason that matched up to me. Did you read the submission guidelines? Yup, multiple times even having two other people go through it with me making sure there wasn't anything I was missing. How new is the site you submitted? 5 years old, under the name notebookforums for 4 years, before that it was "talknotebooks" which also was submitted and never made it on DMOZ. Was it submitted during the slight hiatus? It's been submitted 3-4 times over the last 4 years, no response. Finally a few months ago, I tried to get in touch with someone about it and I was given the cut and paste response about how busy they are and it will be reviewed when someone has time. Also, how they're not there as a service, but they're a project. With all the information notebookforums has (2 million+ posts, 110,000+ members) free service, only started putting ads on last year to pay for hosting... I have no idea why it doesn't make it into the directory where people can find it and use the info (largest notebook discussion board in the world). I don't want to sit here and complain or get mad about it, but I can't help but really wonder what's going on over @ DMOZ. I have never bought a link, traded links, or pulled any SEO tricks that anyone would question. Every link is natural and I would think it would be the type of site DMOZ would want, as well as Google would give high PR to, but 4 years and no word from DMOZ, and Google gives us a 4/10 PR lol. Guess buying links and bribing people is what makes a site truly valuable. notebookforums.com can't make it into the category, but this site that's been shut down for over 3 years is in there lol edgeworld.com/notebook/
DMOZ is museum of dead links didn't you know that. One really has to wonder what is the point of that project when they don't want more editors, don't list websites... somebody might think purpose of it is to have PR8 link farm for someones links.
Every time you resubmit, your site apparently goes to the back of the review queue. However, I can't see what's wrong with the quality of that website, or the chosen category, on first impressions. In my experience, some categories are extremely difficult to get a listing in, whereas there are other ones where you can put up a 5-page wonder and get it listed within a week or two.
What site? www.pithypedia.com What categories are you not getting into? Reference: Quotations Does that category have an Editor? No Did you read the submission guidelines? Yes, carefully How new is the site you submitted? 3 months Was it submitted during the slight hiatus? *smirk* No It's a PR 5 site with thousands of pages indexed by Google, but DMOZ has shown no interest. I've pretty much given up, but every once in a while I check to see if I have been listed and while I'm there I check out some of the cr*p sites that are included I'd like to see DMOZ institute click tracking and rank sites by popularity. Then they could be a little more liberal about accepting sites and allow the "wisdom of crowds" to determine which sites actually get traffic.
Are you kidding? It's slow enough as it is, and the search function is usually down. I don't think it could cope with click-tracking as well. Not to mention the inevitable abuse that would invite.
Why on earth would dmoz care about link popularity or tracking? It bears no relavance to the goal of the project, therefore its not going to happen anytime soon. Oh and search has been working a little better lately than it has been in the past.
