I have seen several arguments about the different schools of thought on creating 100 small sites vs. 1 huge site vs. 10 medium sites. Could you guys throw a noob a ballpark figure on how many pages puts a site in each category.

Is small less than 10 pages, medium less than 100, etc?

i personally dont categorise web sites in this way. i categorise them by purpose - which also heavily ties in with the size of the site.

portfolio websites tend to be 1-10 pages

information sites - 30-xxx depending on how long they have been established

web 2.0 websites - who knows? from 100 to 1000 pages

... there are also other categories i place sites in in my mind, the sizes obviously interlink

A one page site is no good. Mutiple pages are needed for good rank.

You can make small sites with 10 to 50 pages instead of one site with thousands of pages. Mutiple sites can help because they can be very specific in topic for more traffic.

For informational pages, I'd change the xxx to xxxx (at least).

well it depends really - you get more informational websites in xxx than xxxx, its just the ones with xxxx arent really focused on what information they provide.

wikipedia, about, etc. - huge websites but there arent many of them

sites focused on specific topics are more in the xxx range, and there are more of them than the big players

You probably do get more in the xxx than the xxxx, but the part about not being focused is not something you can say as a hard and fast rule. Yeah, some are all over the board, but some of us are quite focused.

It's hard to say, because bigger sites needs more maintenace. Small one doesn't need paying to much attention, but reveue is not great. When you have to work on huge site, you will not have a time to playing with many small fleas.

Very true, you also don't need to. Maintaining a large site is closer to a job than a past time so it really helps if you are interested in the content, otherwise you'll start looking for another job :)
